I have been playing Violin for about four years. I can tell you that learning an instrument doesn’t just take 3 months. It took me weeks to learn the basic hand positions, how to hold my instrument, the flats sharps, etc. it took me about another year to learn how to shift, and I have yet to learn vibration. You cannot simply learn an instrument in 3 months, and expect to be able to teach someone else. This is a very poor decision

It is truly a sad thing that he will leave. I encourage all to share this website with friends, family, and relatives. He has been a great teacher and deserves even more than 1 room to teach in. If you noticed, band has a couple more rooms then orchestra students do. I myself don't think students should be taught by band teachers. It is quite complex to learn shifting, vibrato, and how to read 3 clefs. (Or four if you count tenor clef). Me and my friends already took these instruments when we were younger and we are usually given harder music. If we need help, we instantly ask the teacher. But if the teacher isn't advanced enough, than we have no help. Mr. Griffith knows how to help us and it won't just take summer to learn how.

This is a poor decision for Batavia Music by Batavia schools. This sets a horrible precedent in staffing music in a district which people are proud of their music programs. As an alumnus, and a music teacher, it is sad to see this happen anywhere, but really very disappointing at my alma mater.

Chris is one of the most talented music educators that I've had the opportunity to meet. The passion he brings to orchestra is mirrored by his students, and his spot on District 101's roster is very important to the quality of this team. This is a poor decision and one that unfortunately reminds you that education isn't about the students first.

As a former orchestra teacher in Batavia, this unfortunately does not surprise me, but it is a devastating decision by the school board. Orchestras need to be taught by string teachers. When introducing concepts like shifting, vibrato, tuning, they need to be done in a particular way with knowledge of development. But even more important than the pedagogy is the introduction of the love of the literature and the playing in the orchestra that Chris has certainly achieved from the sheer volume of these comments.

When our children are on the road to excellence, it is because they are being trained and educated by qualified professionals, and this is one of the important reasons why Professor Griffin must remain in school, to continue training future musicians of Rotolo Middle School. Please allow the children to continue their musical education with Orchestra Director Chris Griffith, it is an excellent opportunity for all!

Sorry to say, but this is the school loss... they just let go the districts most amazing orchestra teacher. Why does the school board even begin to THINK that a BAND teacher can teach an orchestra, it just doesn't make any sense whatsoever. Also, many people have been mentioning that if Mr. Griffith is let go, they will not be joining orchestra next year. The schools boards decision affects us all very poorly. They are diminishing the student's music education all for what? Budget reason. Sounds like B.S to me... We will miss you Mr. Griffith :((

As a former band director in Batavia, I am disappointed and outraged that the school board would make such a foolish decision. Sam Rotolo would be ashamed of the Batavia educational leadership for allowing this to happen. Batavia Music Buffs, don’t allow this!

I am not in orchestra, but Mr. Griffith does lessons for our choir class and he is so much fun! I have had lots of friends saying that if Mr. Griffith is fired, they will no longer be joining the orchestra, so that is the fault of our school that we could no longer be the best music program around.
