Taking away personal departmental recognition
destroys some of the value of the degree. The students of today deserve no less than the students of yesterday. Learn by doing means improving as you go- and setting that example! Placing profit above people sets a bad example, and is not what we want our students to learn .
A less personal work environment fosters a lack of commitment . A more personal one encourages commitment and investment by employees. Which direction are we encouraging this new generation to go ?!

I want to graduate with my department like everyone else. It's such a special time for recognition and doing a huge ceremony would make everyone feel like just a number

Keep the department ceremonies! No one wants to sit through the reading of hundreds of names.

According to Mustang News this Petition over department commencement ceremonies proves unnecessary since departments still have the option to continue their ceremonies. I hope the rest of you will give your opinions that hiring a company to read off names as fast as possible have multiple students on stage getting "diplomas" at the same time, where parents cannot snap a shot of their student, much less SEE or recognize their student is not the same as the department events, and is a waste of time and money. Please through your comments, or maybe the original maker of the petition will revise this to say, that we want a ceremony that is meaningful not one that is done to rush through the ceremony acknowledging all the hard work and efforts of the graduating students.

At my daughter's high school graduation of 3000, I never was able to even get a glimpse of her during the ceremony due to the number of people present. I was looking forward to actually being able to "see" her graduate college. This news is very disappointing. Please teconsider.

Please let us have the opportunity to be recognized within the department. It is where we spend the most time to do work and talk to our classmates!

Cal Poly needs to back down and let departments do their ceremonies. There will be 1000+ graduates at the big ceremony and reading the names for both will make the graduation take too many hours. Ours doesn't start until 4pm meaning be there at 3 and end at 9? 10? Think Cal Poly, think!!

I do not understand why this is happening. As a student I don't feel validated. when this type of measures are implemented, us students do not find out until the change happens. I paid my dues, classes, tuition everything and I do not feel that having ONE graduation for EVERYONE who is graduating is fair. I do not see the benefit of doing this. Additionally I don't want my parents and family members who will be traveling over 260 miles ( ~+4hrs) to come to a graduation where they will not be able to enjoy the satisfaction of having a FIRST GENERATION STUDENT who is the 2nd member of the family to receive a Bachelor's degree. We are not just numbers, we DESERVE to have a more intimate ceremony where we get to have our names to be called with no rush and no disrespect. We Deserve to share that precious moment with those who were there for us (professors, classmates, and most importantly loved ones) and have them enjoy that time. PLEASE reconsider this and DO NOT LET US GRADUATE WITH SUCH A VERY UNPLEASANT EXPERIENCE. Graduation is a moment that will stay in our hearts forever as a nice memory, and by doing the larger commencement ceremony our time as Cal-Poly students will not feel as special as it should be.

This is worth crying over! After going in debt $100,000+ we get to attend a totally unsatisfying graduation. Shame on CP.

Cal Poly needs that students and parents should have a word. When I wrote in asking how we were supposed to eat dinner when the ceremony has us arriving at 3 and going for 4+ hours. They actually said that they can do the processional, speeches, and call all the names and hand out the facsimile diplomas in 2 hours. It is embarrassing they can't figure out even at 7 students a minute it would take over 2 hours just to call the names and shake hands.
