Bring Back the Buses

This is not acceptable without sidewalks.

Our neighborhood is absolutely not safe for our elementary students to walk with no sidewalks to school. Have you truly witnessed the crazy accelerated driving to get to work at that time in the morning?!

I have have safety concerns regarding the walk my son will take and I think that many parents will wind up driving their children as a result of this change. I believe that this will significantly disrupt traffic flow in and around Charles Barrett.

Please reconsider your decision about Charles Barrett buses. Thank you.

Before ACPS can implement a new walk to school policy they need to work with the City, the School Administrators and the Parents to come up with a workable solution and timeline. This is definitely a safety issue, but also a logistics issue for many sets of working parents (i.e. Rec at CBES is at capacity). At a minimum ACPS needs to define and measure the safest route to school for each home, not the shortest route (which may not be safe). The safest route to school should be measured and used for the policy.

Please bring the busses back for the neighborhoods without sidewalks.

Though my daughter lives close to school and has a safe walking route, many other children in our neighborhood do not. Many streets have no sidewalks and have heavy traffic during the morning drop off time. Please reconsider.

We live in the Charles Barrett zone at one of the furthest points. I would not feel comfortable having my 5th grader walk the route to school by himself if he were attending CBES.

This makes no sense. The safety of children should be priority #1.

I have one grandchild at CBES and who will be there in a couple of years. We live close enough to walk and do so occasionally.... when an adult walks with him. Until the proper sidewalks are in place, he will not be allowed to walk alone. This is sad as I remember walking to school with friends and some of those friendships are still in place though I now live 1500 miles away. We should also consider the health benefits of that walk to and from school. As a former school board member in another state I appreciate and understand the underlying factors, mainly one of cost but all things considered it is a small price to pay for the safety of our children. Thank you for your continued consideration of this matter.

Please please bring back the buses. I don’t have a child directly affected but I drive this route regularly during school hours and am very concerned about the students safety.

Even though my kids are in High School, the bus to Charles Barrett each day was important for safety reasons, but also it created a community for our neighborhood kids. Please use good judgement and return the bus routes to their previous schedules and routes.

Makes no sense. Bring Back the buses for our children's safety.

My husband & I just bought our home in Beverly Hills SO THAT our two children will be able to go to school at Charles Barrett. I was surprised to hear that the buses would no longer be provided and see that the direct route to the elementary school did not have sidewalks. This seems to be an either or situation. Either our children need to be bused safely to school, or they need to be provided with sidewalks & crosswalks to make a safe walk to school possible for them.

Although my sons are no longer elementary school students, I had concerns about them walking when they were younger. Please reinstitute the school bus option before there is a tragic accident.

Bus transportation is a critical safety issue for the children and residents of this community. I the 1980's when many of our homes were redistricted from George Mason to Charles Barrett the school system recognized that the lack of sidewalks, congested parking and busy street crossings justified bus service to Charles Barrett. These factors have since become an even greater hazard.

Although my children have not had bus service to CBES in their years of attendance, and walked to school, their route to school is along sidewalks. So many of their classmates who no longer have bus service do not have sidewalks along their routes. It is not merely an inconvenience to these families, it is a real safety issue. As many have pointed out, many streets in the neighborhood are full of high-speed commuters who will not see children in between parked cars along the street. It does not appear that all routes were investigated during rush hour traffic; this hazardous situation would have been readily apparent.

Buses are necessary if there isn't access to sidewalks. The neighborhood is used as much by commuter traffic as residential traffic during drop off and pick up times, which should weigh in on the evaluation.

Safety of our children needs to be a top priority. Please listen to the parents affected and bring back the buses!
