Ygnacio Valley High School currently has two lunches, Lunch A and Lunch B. Which is based on your 4th-period class. Many of us students would prefer to have one lunch and here is why.

To build a community we need to expand our relationships, and in our current situation, it is very limited. Teacher-student communication will decrease, friends will be separated, and which will leave us with an empty feeling. This forces us, students, to get help before or after school and many of us will be occupied with extracurricular activities, work, etc. Clubs and meetings will also be difficult to join/attend during lunch.

With two lunches, comes new rules which also limit what we do. For example, the rule that prevents us, students at lunch, to enter hallways holds us back from being prepared for our next class. As well as the idea that all students are to be in the quad during lunch, considering there aren’t enough tables and seats, most are just standing around. And to those who are in class during lunch, are ripped from their right to use the bathroom. With the excuse of “kids cutting class to go with their friends during lunch” or something along those lines, would not happen if we stayed with the traditional ONE LUNCH.

If you compare Ygnacio Valley HS to other high schools in the MDUSD district, the population is smaller here. With a total of approximately 1,200 students enrolled, we are told that the school cannot feed that many people at once. Other schools like Mt Diablo, Concord, College Park, and Northgate, have a student population ranging from 1,300-2,000 students. And those schools all have ONE lunch.

So please, let’s go back to the traditional one lunch schedule.

im hearing from so many of you about how hard it is to actually use your lunch break for clubs or meeting up with friends. the amount of people forced to just stand around in the quad is wild and it doesnt make sense why we have to deal with this when other schools manage fine. thanks for keeping this moving because someone at the top has to start listening to us

the momentum behind this is honestly wild and it shows just how much we all miss eating with our friends. i never expected this many people to feel the same way but it feels good to know we are all on the same page.

it makes no sense to split us up when my friends are all in the other lunch. finding teachers for tutoring is basically impossible now because they have to teach during one of the sessions. just fix the lines and let us eat together.

As a parent, I know that logistical issues are behind this decision but maybe nutritious cold lunches could be served in separate locations from hot lunches so more kids can be served during the short time frame. Let’s have a brainstorming session so the kids can be together. High school socialization happens at lunch.

We should all have lunch together plz it’s so unnecessary to have two separate ones

The two lunch schedule causes more problems than it solves. The only problem it solves is the lunch lines which are not even that big of a deal. 4th period is now basically a lock down period now. People aren’t able to hang out with who they want during their free time because their schedules don’t allow it. In addition, we can’t even access our lockers, which is ridiculous because it is the one time of day we should be able to. Even administration and teachers disagree with having these lunches. This school is beginning to resemble more of a prison than an actual school. If this schedule is for the students, shouldn’t the students themselves decide if they want it?

There was still like 10 mins at the end of lunch for kids to get food. The problem was there wasn’t enough food. Time wasn’t the problem
