This firing is completely inappropriate. The student should be held accountable for what he's done.

When students have to stand up for their teachers because the administration doesn't, that's a sad state of affairs.
Don't let one bad apple spoil a good resource for everyone else!

Suspend the student now. These kids need discipline. Teach should have never been in trouble.

Re hire the teacher punish the student. What he did was the same as going through her pocketbook. Which he would have gotten in trouble for.

As someone with a mother in teaching, I would be devastated to have this happen to her. What she does with her life is her business as far as I'm concerned. Where do we draw the line between not being too harsh on students and allowing them to rule the classroom? These people are giving their time to teach our youth, I think we should stop letting students treat them like dirt. Teachers are people too, for god's sake.

While a foolish mistake to leave the phone unlocked, the student invaded her privacy and should be punished, not the teacher.
There would be no question of the student being punished if he rummaged through her purse or some other personal belongings. Taking her phone is no different.

Why I have to sign this petition is beyond me. This woman should absolutely get her job back and that student should be expelled and/or punished for invading the woman's privacy.

The student(s) who invaded Ms Arthur's privacy are clearly the ones at fault here. I can see absolutely no reason that Ms. Arthur should be compelled to resign.

The fact we even have to sign a petition for this is crazy. The teacher at most should of got a warning for not putting a password on her phone. Certainly not fired though.
The student is clearly in the wrong here!
