There comes a time when personal responsibility must be conferred on Tue individual committing Tue crime, rather than blaming the victim by saying that they enabled the perpetrator.
While I agree that it wasn't the best choice for Mrs Arthur to leave her phone unattended, the student who picked up the phone, searched through photos, an d then distributed the content needs to be held responsible for making the series of choices that brought this situation about.
To punish Mrs Arthur an d do nothing to the student contributes to that student's delinquency by showing him/her that there is no consequence for these types of actions, and embolden others to follow that example.
You want to put a stop to students' bad behaviors? Punish them, be strict and teach them to respect others regardless of how they feel about them personally.

>student steals teacher's property
>student steals teacher's personal information
>teacher fired
Mrs. Arthur had reasonable expectation of privacy and it was breached. Locked phone or not, that's stolen property and stolen personal info.

Disgraceful behaviour by the students involved. Theft and invasion of privacy, hope they get thrown out of school and the teacher re-instated. The superintendent is an idiot.

Data privacy is a serious issue and anyone infringing on other person's privacy should be punished. We should teach children that stealing someone's data is exactly same as going to someone's house an stealing physical objects.
Moreover, teachers are humans too. They are allowed to have their own person life.

If anything, the student should be charged and the teacher allowed to return to her job. The boy who went through her personal photos is to blame, not her.

I'm from Portugal, and I wonder what the hell is happening in the USA. I read so many stories that just trample over the most basic common sense that its mind boggling. I actually feel stupid signing this petition in a "it can't be possible" way. Anyway the teacher should obviously get her job back, with a tremendous apology and the dumbass kid should be disciplined. Duh!

Highschool is the final stage in preparing children for adulthood and idepemdence. Responsibility for one's actions is a key lesson in life. The unfortunate outcome of this situation is not only giving children the idea that victim shaming is appropriate, but it is also showing them that taking responsibility and accountability for their own actions, be they a momentary lapse in judgement or not, is not necessary.
This teacher needs a sincere apology, both as a teacher and a fellow human being, and the options n to be reinstated. The student needs to learn an important lesson in responsibility and accountability.

Despite what Superintendent David Eubanks thinks, it's actually 2016 and women are allowed to engage in and enjoy sex with other individuals that they choose. The only thing inappropriate here is the utter lack of loyalty to your employee and a complete disregard for holding a 16 year old student accountable for his actions. I find it interesting that an older generation can simultaneously complain about "how entitled our generation is" while allowing kids to get away with things like this. Pick one.

Everyone deserves the right to privacy. No one should be able to violate that. If they do, that is illegal and that should be punished.
