Too much time invested on testing instead of educating. This 'one size fits all' philosophy doesn't work. R.I. is one of few states to continue on this path. It undermines the rights of parents to choose what they want for their children. It doesn't provide for any skill except test-taking. Only the teacher and parents have the skillset - they know their student and child's capablilities or goals. I suggest Pawtucket administrators/teachers read Diana Ravitch's article (DianaRavitch.net) from 3/5/15 re: Chicago.

And where was the due process? Teachers don't check their civil rights at the door.

This great teacher should be returned to his position, immediately. These pseudo-mandatory standardized testing are an outrage. Push for right-sized testing, not abusive over-testing!

Why are teachers being silenced for answering student questions truthfully? Shame on the BOE and Pearson.

This is so wrong in so many ways. Hoping that this petition will be successful and therefore a positive force in bringing an end to the testing madness in RI and the rest of the country.

Only at JMW are the students so passionate about their school, teachers, and education. I am proud to say I had ashton for four years. He truly wants the best for his students, and educates them on issues that are important to them. Just because he educates them on standardized testing he should not be punished. Even if this administrative action is within their power, it is immoral!

How can you teach the children of AMERICA that hiding truths or discsiing their legal rights is cause for discipline? How dare you support the destruction of their constutuional rights. Your schools admisistration should be ashamed of yourselves... I feel pity for you...

Schools do not do a good enough job informing parents/students of their rights. There is no reason to suspend Mr. Ashton for doing what was correct.

Bill Ashton is an awesome teacher and was a pleasure to have as a high school teacher. I see no precise reason as to why he was suspended. It is clear to me that Ashton was just doing his job by telling his students the truth and not only alerting them but lessening their stress. Please bring Ashton Back.
