Recently, Instagram has begun removing the likes from pictures, which now only allows the account holder to see how many likes a picture received. While they claim it is to help end bullying and create a more content centered platform, they do not realize the harm this could cause for the advertising industry. The advertising industry in recent years has relied on the data produced from social media to gauge how campaigns are doing. By removing the likes, Instagram has essentially stolen valuable data from us that hinders our ability to measure engagement. Furthermore, the removal of likes could be detrimental to any influencer or company that uses influencers. With no way to know if followers are interacting with the content, it is extremely difficult to decide where to spend ad dollars. By bringing back the likes, Instagram will help advertisers navigate the ever-changing social landscape.
