It's official, University of Detroit Mercy has limited their meal plan so that each student only gets 5 guest swipes per semester. This means that visitors, commuter friends, and even family members that might pay for a student's meal plan have limited opportunities to eat with the student. Not only is this an unexpected change, but it is also unwarranted because the students pay for a meal plan at the beginning of the semester and honestly students should be able to spend their money the way they choose to. The Titan Dining Room administrators might think that by doing this, they will reduce the cost of food, but where is all the extra food that used to be eaten by guests going? Is it wasted or thrown out? Lastly, most students have extra meal swipes at the end of the semester which will go to waste if not used. Although this might have been an effort to save the university money, it is clear that this does not benefit anyone and only ends up hurting students and their families in the long run.

We are crawling toward that first hundred and honestly it feels like people are finally starting to notice the hallway chatter about these ridiculous swipe limits. If we can just hit that milestone before I email the dining office later it might actually show them that we are not just going to roll over and accept this wasted food situation.

This is completely absurd. We, students, pay for these meals. We should be able to swipe as many guests as we want. At the end of every semester, every student has both excess meals and flex, even after swiping more than 5 students in. Limiting guest swipes not only punishes those students, but also their friends who simply want to dine with them.
UDM has a LARGE population of commuter students who should be able to use their friends swipes since most residential students don’t use all of their meal swipes anyway. Students are paying for the meals, so they should decide how they use them.
This is absolutely ridiculous. When the University starts paying for our meals, then they can try and regulate how we spend OUR money. They also state that they want to prevent people from leaving the school, but what happens when students have guest and they cannot feed them? Absolutely terrible decision.
This is the only reason why I would go to TDR. They already scam students out of all their unused meals at the end of the semester, so why not let this happen? This university keeps charging more for everything and the quality is going down... #OpenUpLivernois
This is unfair. Why is a meal plan so expensive if we can’t have more swipes for guests? Last year I literally had over 60 unused swipes while having guests. 5 is a joke!

As a parent I believe if we are helping pay and there are swipes that are left that are paid for it should be up to the students to make that decision on how their funds are used.
