A close friend of mine is enjoying a very active life with his wife and family because of Dr. Zucker's skill and advocacy. If my friend is thankful for the doctor, then so am I.

I’m a recent transplant recipient and I’m first and foremost grateful to God who placed me in the cable hands of Dr. Zucker and his team for being instrumental in procuring a heart that was and is still suitable for me and has enabled me to continue living a normal life
Every life is important and I’m so sorry for the family that suffered such a severe loss
Dr. Mark Zucker still has more important work to do along with his skilled team to enable more people like me to have the best outcome
Therefore, it’s in the best interest of Newark Beth Israel and future patients to do your investigation speedily and reinstate this dedicated man to his post in which he has demonstrated his excellent medical skills for so many decades.

When I was a freshman in college my Dad, Joe Spinella, was given a new heart by Dr. Zucker. Because of his efforts, my Dad will get to see me graduate from college and start my first teaching job. One day he will get to walk me down the aisle and run around with his future grandchildren. These are things I never dreamed my Dad would see because of how serious his heart condition was before he had a heart transplant, but now he will get to be a part of these amazing moments in my life. Dr. Zucker didn’t just save my Dad’s life, but he saved mine because now I will get to have more time with my Dad than I ever dreamed possible. Thank you Dr. Zucker for all the wonderful things you have done for my family and for all of the other transplant patients!- MaryRose Spinella

Many changes, most adverse, have occurred to the Newark Beth Israel Heart Transplant Program since it was absorbed by the Robert Wood Johnson Medical System in 2015. Most recent and damaging to the program is the removal of Dr. Mark Zucker as director of the program and his placement on administrative leave, a prelude, many of us patients believe, to his eventual firing.
It must be noted that Dr. Zucker founded the program in 1989 and has guided it to international prominence over the years. He has also made it the keystone of cardiac care for the residents of Newark and surrounding area, many of whom are poor, most of whom are African-American. Dr. Zucker's placement on administrative leave has threatened all that he and the program have accomplished since its founding: the uncertainty surrounding his future is engulfing the program; patients are anxious, beginning to believe their treatment will suffer and that they will be obliged to seek help elsewhere; staff are equally uncertain and don't know to whom they can turn in difficult situations. Tellingly, all the senior staff, including Dr. David Baran, the former assistant director, got the message early on and have all left, leaving skilled but relatively inexperienced cardiologists in charge. Many of the senior nurse practitioners, the backbone of the program, have also left or, we fear, soon might.
On a personal level, my confidence in the program has been shaken. Dr. Baran was my cardiologist from the time I received my transplant in 2014 until he left. I experienced his departure as a great loss. I then began working with Dr. Zucker and grew to depend on his impeccable judgment and accessibility. Now he is unavailable to me - and others -- and will soon most likely be gone. I fear, we fear, that should he go, the program will also go, end, thirty years of clinical history and practice down the drain.
To us, Dr. Zucker's patients, the solution is readily apparent. We are, after all, not burdened by concern

How could the administration punish the most talented physician in the entire RWJ/Barnabus system???? What the hell is wrong with you people. Not only is Dr. Zucker brilliant & an amazing diagnostician he is caring beyond words. He takes his time to explain things to patients & families. He is without a doubt the best physician I have ever worked with in my career. BRING HIM BACK NOW!!!!!
