I am a former FCPS student, I graduated from South County High in 2015 and I am currently in my third year of my undergraduate program at the University of Washington in Seattle. Seeing a school getting rid of their free period is honestly shameful, I took rigorous AP classes throughout my high school career and if it wasn't for that free period (we called it hawk time when I attended Hayfield Secondary), I would not be able to complete the assignments that were due for my classes. Having a free period is essential for students to seek help for a specific subject or in the case of others to complete assignments that are due. When I was in high school I was involved in many extracurricular activities and I'm sure that hasn't changed a bit. We simply don't have the time after school to complete the amount of assignments handed to us, especially if students are taking AP or Honors courses. Even if students are not taking intensive courses it also serves as a time to unwind and relax from the stresses of class. Being a university student and seeing that a high school in my old county has gotten rid of time that was essential to many student's success is quite embarrassing. I do ask that you reconsider reinstating "cougar time" at OHS, many students depend on it.

As a junior this year I have very hard classes and have used cougar time to do work everyday and would like to continue doing that. It's very helpful and allows me to do my homework while getting help from teachers and I don't have the time to stay after school due to sports. Don't punish those who use cougar time wisely because of the few who take advantage of it.

I don’t go to this school but we have homeroom at my school, I don’t know what I could do without it. It is such an important time for kids to get work done, especially if they’re in drama, choir, and sports.

I always look forward to cougar time because it is a nice break in the middle of the very stressful school day.

I like to go to a quiet place to get my work done and some classes are very distracting and it would be hard to focus!

Cougar time has provided me as well as my fellow peers with many benefits. It has allowed us to complete homework, meet up for the PBLs and assignments we get (at ever increasing rates), retake test, make-up test, and study for test. It has also provided me a place to relax, wind down, and chill before the next class stresses me out. Taking away cougar time would be a serious disadvantage to all students including me. It would force me (and others) to rethink plans when it comes to homework. It would force me (and other) to stay after-school and with only one day for late-buses, it would force our parents to pick us up more often and overhaul family plans. I don't understand the reasoning of eliminating such an popular and useful time. I have been increasing frustrated with the OHS administrators changes they make every single year. Inconsistent polices and rules only confuse students and teachers especially during the school year. Please reconsider this decision, and if your curious ask the student population and teachers because they will be impacted by this decision.

Cougar time is a necessary function for a large majority of students who need help in doing their best in their classes. The administration should put more resources on catching and severely punishing those who abuse cougar time, rather than make the innocent students pay for what they didn't do. My responsibility in school is for my self and my learning, not for a student who doesn't not care about their own.
