We assert the current Science Instruction Policy:

“Philosophical and religious theories are based, at least in part, on faith, and are not subject
to scientific test and refutation. Such beliefs shall not be discussed in science classes, but may
be addressed in the social science and language arts curricula.”

Goes too far as a prior restraint on free speech, and therefore we are requesting this Bret Harte School Board amend this policy as follows:

“Students may constructively discuss philosophical and/or religious theories provided they are presented in a manner that directly informs the educational inquiry at hand, and are presented respectfully without proselytizing.”

Kids learn better when they can actually talk about things. Censoring them just makes them stop asking questions. Keep science class open to real discussion.

These students should be able to respectfully and constructively discuss philosophical and/or religious thoughts/theories/concepts in all classes, including Science so long as the discussion is directly related to the content of the class curriculum. This right is afforded to them by the first amendment and I think that the school board should uphold their rights and amend the current policy to reflect that right.
