To: The Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC) Problem: Currently the vast majority of Obstetricians in Canada routinely recommend caesarean section as the only mode of delivery for breech babies, regardless of the circumstances or wishes of the birthing family. Vaginal breech birth is rarely permitted. Our position: We believe that the decision of how to deliver a breech baby should rest with the informed family. The SOGC must make recommendations so that in addition to caesarean section, experienced Obstetricians and Midwives will be encouraged to conduct unbiased informed consent discussions, and to offer the choice of vaginal breech birth to families without fear of professional censure. We are a grassroots organization, advocating for the rights of birthing women and their families. Despite recent research clearly indicating that vaginal breech birth and caesarean section have similar levels of both safety and risk, birth care providers persist in not informing families that vaginal birth is an option. Nearly all breech babies in Canada are born by Caesarean section, due to this lack of balanced and unbaiased informed consent discussion. We hope to raise awareness among birthing women, their families, and their care providers, in order to get the birth-mode decision back in the hands of the people who live with the long-term consequences of the birth.
