My wife and I were very fortunate in the fact that our son was able to achieve a good latch from the get go. The connection between mom and child is obvious. From a males perspective I can only see benefits to breast feeding and would not want any other families to have early "hiccups" in the early stages of bonding. It is very unfortunate that some families may have had some unnecessary difficulties due to not having a lactation consultant.

Cutting one salary will end up costing you millions in long term health care costs. Ask your finance department, it doesn't make sense. If you continue to accept funding from pharmaceuticals, perhaps you could use some of those funds for something valuable.

I think that this service is vital for new mum's. After the overwhelming experience of your first birth there is nothing more difficult then a baby who has difficulty latching, or a mum who feels completely useless and out of her element. I know I could have used one for my first baby.

Without proper teaching many new Mothers will be overwhelmed, and will give up on breastfeeding. RVH should be ashamed of themselves for cutting these positions. Brestfeeding should be taught, encouraged and celebrated!!

I believe that RVH should re-establish lactation support services at RVH as soon as possible as it is a is vital patient service! Maternity ward nurses are not formally trained in supporting new mothers with breastfeeding.
