El Cajon's City Council voted 5-0 to ban feeding people who are homeless in El Cajon. It is now against the law. When a law is immoral, it must be rejected. This ban is a punitive measure under the guise of combatting the Hepatitis A outbreak. Hepatitis A is not spread by community and religious organizations feeding people, it is spread when the local government fails to provide adequate public bathrooms and hand-washing facilities for people.
Please join us in advocating for El Cajon residents being targeted by this new ordinance by calling or emailing El Cajon's Mayor and City Council members and telling them:
"I heard about the recent ban you helped pass that prohibits people from sharing food with other people who are hungry and I am extremely upset and disappointed. If you are really concerned about the welfare of the homeless residents of El Cajon, you need to 1) immediately rescind the ban on distributing food to them, 2) provide adequate public bathrooms and hand-washing stations, and 3) increase housing and Hep A vaccines available to people who are homeless. Trying to starve out your homeless population during the holidays is not what the City of El Cajon should want to be known for. Since you voted on the prevailing side, please correct this terrible injustice by moving to revisit the motion and vote against it."

Seeing 250 people stand up against this cruel ban gives me so much hope that we can actually force the council to change their minds. When I first started this after seeing my own neighbors go hungry, I worried that people would look the other way.

I had two brothers that were homeless. Without my compassion towards this problem along with all of those who helped, it would have been a complete loss. Everyone deserves to eat. It isn't right to with hold food. Put yourself in their position and then tell me its alright.
This an inhumane ruling that criminalizes decent, community-positive behavior. Please re -think this policy. And, in addition, please provide decent public facilities for both homeless and non so that people can frequent public spaces with dignity.
I got Hep A this time last year and was in the hospital for 4 days the first week of december 2016. I got Hep A from the jack in the box on chase and avocado NOT from being HOMELESS or A DRUG USER. And NOW they are harassing and discriminating against me so much so that I'm emotionally a wreck.
It's time for the City of El Cajon to show compassion for those without homes. Especially recognizing that El Cajon has exorbitantly high rents in El Cajon that often forces people to live on the streets!!
Starving the homeless will not keep hepatitis A from spreading. The homeless will suffer. If you want to stop Hep A from spreading than implementation sanitation areas and provide them with means of sanitation.
Break the ban! Feed the homeless!!!
This ban is despicable. You can't "ban" feeding the hungry, and you should be ashamed of yourselves for trying.

As a public health researcher, we know it is the humane and just thing to allow people to give away and feed others in public areas. Have some compassion and allow people who choose to, to feed others.
