I especially "call on the EC and Member States to urgently realise employment-stability, and
explicit criteria for career progression. The structure of funding schemes should reflect
this. The proportion of research scientists on short-term contracts is unacceptable and this
affects the quality and impact of the science they do.

I have been a supporter of the campaign "Trust in Researchers" signed by 13 thousand European researchers in year 2010. What has happen with the promises of Mr. Smit and the changes then announced by the Commisariat of Science? It seems that European Union has changed little in this regard. It is important to empower scientits, both junior and senior, to play a more important role than bureaucrats in EU policies. More information at our Blog:

Life as a contract researcher makes planning for you future and having a family very difficult. We need to move from our flat (and have for the past 3 years) due to our growing family but it's impossible to know where to move to and we don't want move the kids from schools too often

The 'Bratislava Declaration of Young Researchers' is a timely and important declaration, that should be supported by young researchers so that the aspirations outlined can be realised in future European frameworks for research. As a scientific community, it is important that we empower young researchers to embark on productive, sustainable and collaborative research careers. By enabling young researchers to influence policy through the declared aspirations, young researchers will have better opportunities to thrive in their research which will significantly transform people and society.

The current system makes my PhD a chore instead of a passion. This must change, or the field will collapse under its flaws.

This should be a priority for EU research if there are to be any functioning university based researchers in Europe in 20 years.
