Just let the students do so, it's the best year for them to be themselves and this is just the cherry on top. They want to leave as themselves and so would I as a senior.

I do not understand why you have allowed all previous classes to decorate their graduation caps but suddenly you change your mind after having me & my child work so hard to ensure her college acceptance. Not only have I spent hours with her helping to get to sports and paying for clubs, SAT's, tutoring, and college applications, I have had to watch her struggle every day to get where she is now. This most definitely sends the wrong message to the kids. Telling my daughter (and the parents) to work so hard, to get to go to the college of her choosing. Then not letting her be proud to show off that school at graduation is such a ridiculous move, and frankly it's a slap in the face. I have waited 18 years to see my little girl walk across that stage to get her diploma, so I am very disappointed that you are taking away from her graduation experience, as it is a monumental moment in her life. Also, I do believe that you are taking the easy way out and using the reasoning that it's "too hard to check all of the kid's caps for inappropriate decorations." It is not that difficult to order some extra caps for the kids who choose to do so and it surely isn't difficult to quickly check students as they enter the gym before the ceremony.

Decorating your cap is a sign of individuality! It's something for us to be proud of for graduating and making it this far. I hope the students can decorate them after this petition.

My son was allowed to decorate his cap last year. We beautifully depicted the college he chose with the UCSD Triton. this year we hope to decorate his younger brothers cap with the Chapman Panther where he will attend school and play football in the fall. While I understand the fear of inappropriate behavior and dress at graduation. I don't think punishing the kids who have worked so very hard for this right of passage is the answer. The school uses Herff Jones for graduation accoutrements why not have them provide the school with extra caps, so they are available for kids who may try to do something inappropriate. There has to be a better way to handle this, then by making sweeping generalizations about these kids!

I would love to know the districts "logical" justification for this restriction. It's decorating a cap for crying out loud. What are they afraid of? I graduated 2 years ago and we were allowed to partake in this tradition. My friends and I took pride in our decorated caps because like the petition says, it's a representation of us wanting to show off our futures and everything we had worked so hard towards. I mean that's the least you could let the students do after 4 of the most difficult years a person endures, which is too often disregarded, between the stress of school trying to get into another good school, potentially working, figuring out oneself and the world they must take on post-grad.
