Boston-area Clergy Call on Mayor Walsh to Uphold "No" Casino Vote

The following letter will be presented to Mayor Marty Walsh urging him to publicly uphold and defend the "No" casino vote that took place in Boston on November 5, 2013.

The proposed casino at Suffolk Downs is arguably the most significant challenge facing the City of Boston at present, as research has consistently shown that casinos increase crime, addiction, suicide, pollution, insurance rates, traffic and family instability.

This letter is an important opportunity to let our new mayor know that we as ministers stand in solidarity on this critical local issue, and that we expect the vote that took place in Boston to be upheld. If you are willing to sign your name, please include your title, the name of your church or ministry, and your location.

Many thanks and God Bless!

Dear Mayor Walsh,

We appreciate your vision to strengthen local neighborhoods and to work toward unity that we may be One Boston. As clergy in Boston we share your commitment to the city and the desire for all people to have an opportunity to live peaceful and fruitful lives.

In September 2013 the Boston City Council entrusted the residents of East Boston to represent the entire city of Boston in a vote on a casino proposal at Suffolk Downs. The Suffolk Downs property, located in two host communities (East Boston and Revere), required a “Yes” vote in both communities to proceed. It was clear that this was never about two different proposals in East Boston or Revere, but always about one proposal at Suffolk Downs. On November 5, 2013, the people of East Boston voted against that proposal. Despite this vote and in direct opposition to the will of the people, the Massachusetts Gaming Commission allowed a proposal to go forward at Suffolk Downs in December 2013.

We are deeply concerned by this affront to the democratic process and stand in solidarity with the East Boston vote. We appreciate your efforts to support the November 5 vote against a casino at Suffolk Downs and we call upon you to continue to use the full resources of the city of Boston to protect the vote of the people who clearly said "No" to a casino.

We support business development and job creation that produces long term economic health in the city. While the possibility of new jobs from the Suffolk Downs proposal is alluring at first glance, a casino’s long term negative impacts would far outweigh the promises. A significant increase in crime rates, the doubling of gambling addictions, and the transfer of revenue from the local economy into casino coffers would harm individuals and families and negatively impact local businesses by effectively eliminating 1-2 jobs for every slot machine - and there will be approximately 4,000 slots machines installed at the proposed casino. These impacts would not only be felt in East Boston but in every neighborhood throughout the city.

We join together with you to support the vitality of our neighborhoods, the unity of Boston, and Boston’s vote for a casino free community.

Sincerely,

________

Estimado Alcalde Walsh,

Atentamente,

April 12, 2014

I have been spending my mornings reading through the personal stories people are leaving in the comments about how a casino would wreck the fabric of our neighborhoods. The weight of these concerns confirms why we must insist that our leaders respect the original vote.

April 12, 2014

Seeing this level of backing from our community has been deeply moving and confirms that the residents of Boston are not willing to let this decision go quietly. The momentum we feel right now proves that our shared commitment to protecting our neighborhoods is becoming impossible for the Mayor to ignore.

I know people who grew up in the area around Foxwoods. Little old ladies would go to gamble for the first time and lose their homes. This is a terrible idea!

This casino will negatively impact the City of Boston, along with surrounding communities, contribution to higher crime rates, along with higher gambling addictions, drug and human trafficing, alcohol addictions, pulling money out of the local economy which would adversely impact small businesses, and so much more. Please vote "NO" respecting the voters of East Boston.

The city of Boston has voted on the Casino issue. Please respect that vote. It has consistently been ignored throughout this process. This process has been full of waivers and political games. There should not even be a casino in Revere according to the original legislation.

Dear Mayor Walsh, The proposed casino will be in my parish if Revere gets it. Please do all that you can to prevent this tragedy. If you have read any reports on the deleterious effect that casinos have on the host cities, families and individuals within a 30-50 mile radius of a casino you know that it is the worst thing that we and our neighboring cities could have. Please read the report of the "Institute for American Values" if you havent already done so. As guardian and leader of the people in and around Boston, don't let us become another Atlantic City, Niagra, Detroit or Baltimore. Please!

I am confident that we can find ways to produce jobs and attract additional business to the Boston area that are free from the social ills which the presence of casinos always brings. Mayor Walsh, please build our communities through positive means and not through interests of the casino industry.
