PETITION TO STOP THE CASINO AT SUFFOLK DOWNS The owners of Suffolk Downs and Caesars Entertainment want to build a "resort style" casino at the Suffolk Downs racetrack that would feature up to 4,500 slot machines and draw tens of thousands of visitors to East Boston every day.
Studies have clearly demonstrated that casinos increase crime, traffic, gambling addiction, substance abuse and harm to local businesses, impacts that are multiplied when a casino is located in a densely populated urban neighborhood.
Despite casino developers' claims to the contrary, the facts show that building North America's third largest casino on the East Boston-Revere line will not spark long-term economic development, but will instead undermine ongoing efforts to promote social and economic justice in our neighborhoods and to build community engagement across ethnic, income, religious, and cultural lines.
Additionally, a casino introduces a multinational corporation that will compete directly with local businesses and further burden an area that already hosts an international airport, two tunnels, the Rt. 1 highway, and a large gas tank field.
Any "benefits" the community may receive by way of mitigation or taxes will be offset, we believe, by negative economic, social, and public health impacts.
While the state's 2011 Gaming Law requires that the people of East Boston (as well as Revere) vote in a binding referendum on the casino proposal, we--a coalition of families, faith communities, small businesses, and civic leaders--call on Suffolk Downs to withdraw its application for a casino in East Boston.

The scale of this response is forcing local officials to acknowledge the depth of our opposition. I am currently coordinating with legal counsel to draft a formal request for a meeting with the Gaming Commission to present these concerns directly.

Keep this garbage out of our neighborhood. We have enough problems without adding a massive casino to the mix.

Think about the families living here. This will only bring bad stuff to our doorstep. Not in our backyard!!!

The local businesses are gonna get crushed if this opens. Keep Eastie for the people who actually live here.
