I live in Woodbine and stopped using that dangerous intersection years ago. PLEASE Fix it. Correctly. And that means NOT the R-Cut but with a Grade Separated Interchange. Thank you.

This is one of the most dangerous intersections in the area. A minor fix is not adequate.

The best solution to this issue is an interchange like the one at Toms Creek.

The R-cut is an unacceptable solution and VDOT needs to stop hiding behind some 'scoring system' and go to Blacksburg to evaluate the situation first-hand. The DATA shows how dangerous this intersection is. Development and traffic counts are 10x what they were when the current highway and intersection were designed more than 50 years ago! More growth is coming, and with all of 460 south of this intersection soon to be of interstate conditon with a posted 65 MPH speedlimit, and non-stop grade separated interchanges all the way to the interchange at I-81 it makes no sense that this one junction, at the base of a mountain, on the entrance to a sharp curve, and with very limited sight distance due to grade and horizone line to the south - this needs to be built out as a grade separate interchange. And I don't believe the state has to spend more than $33 Million to do it!!! The fact that 'cheaper' is the ONLY repeated quote from VDOT simply proves they don't want to spend the money and they don't care about safety or future growth. I wonder if the Town & Citizens can SUE VDOT to force a solution?

If the only option VDOT can offer is the R-cut plan, then they would be better off doing nothing at all. What about safety? Currently trying to turn right at Coal Bank Hollow is hard enough now. It will only be made worse. Trucks start to accelerate going up RT 460 in that area so that they can make it up the mountain. That already adds to the danger at Coal Bank Hollo. Now VDOT wants to add in vehicles that will be slowing down or stopping to turn? Has anyone investigated how many accidents occur already at Coal Bank Hollow?
Bad decision on the part of VDOT. What about the options provided earlier this summer?
No R-cut interchange at Coal Bank Hollow!

A grade separated interchange would be a lot safer than an r-cut plan and should be considered. I travel through here a lot and it's very hard to make a left at this intersection!

Unfortunately VDOT will not address the dangerous aspects of this intersection until it becomes a budget issue.

this dangerous highway intersection needs to be addressed and fixed. How many more lives need to be lost?

My 15 year old son was in an accident there and is lucky to be alive. This needs to be fixed the right way. Your solution would not eliminate the scenario that caused his accident and many others.

Although the North Main Street / Farmingdale Lane and 460 intersection is the closest access to 460 for our family, I also consider it the most dangerous. Traffic is moving at a high rate of speed (legally "only" 55 MPH but often much higher) to an intersection which is hidden down a hill from one direction and down an mountain and around a curve in the other. Accidents, including with fatalities, are quite frequent.
One of the proposed solutions is an "R-Cut" in which traffic turning on/off 460 is moved to a secondary road before making the turn. In a common design, left-turn 460 traffic goes through the intersection and does a U-turn making the left turn into a right turn. Turns onto 460 would have to cross 460 to the U-turn lane before completing their turn. Either way, turning left off 460 or entering 460 from North Main Street or Farmingdale Lane, drivers must still make the difficult decision of when to cross through the traffic of 460 which, due to the terrain, does not give sufficient visibility for motorists to make a safe decision especially in light of prevalent speeds. This is especially true during rush hour traffic, which is much longer and heavier than would be expected for a town the size of Blacksburg, when the intersection is heavily congested. Any solution, including an R-Cut, which does not separate the high speed 460 traffic from the turning low speed traffic will remain a safety hazard.
I am sure the R-Cut intersection is much less expensive than the alternatives and that is why it continues to be advanced. But it will not solve the safety problem and I am appalled that VDOT is even considering the option in light of the continued risk of human life, my life and that of my children and neighbors. I urge you to withdraw the R-Cut design which will not solve the problem and instead focus on a grade-separated design which will. I realize that a grade-separated intersection will be difficult and expensive due to the terrain but it is the resp

My family has stopped using this intersection for the safety of our children. Too many people have been injured or lost their lives here. Please put public safety first and fix this intersection correctly.

The plan VDOT is pursuing will just move the problem to other more dangerous areas.

Please do not move forward with the R-cut plan. It will pose a hardship for many, only to move the problem down the road.
