I write to you on behalf of a BIS parents group concerned about the impact on our children’s education next school year and related fees due to the ongoing virus restrictions.
We believe the restrictions in HCMC are likely to continue affecting schools until the end of this year. The economic impact of these long term restrictions is severe on most families in Vietnam and should be recognized.
We all sympathize with the unprecedented situation we all find ourselves in which is not of our making and extremely challenging. We are all in this together and need to support each other.
We observe the following:
- Distance / on-line learning for F1 to F3 children is unsuitable for their needs. This also extends to some of the children in other junior classes too.
- The majority of parents do not have the first language English skills to assist with on-line learning and homework.
- The same parents also have busy workloads and responsibilities which does not allow them to dedicate enough quality time to assisting their children with self-study lessons.
- Everyone is trying to replace the personal interactions and interpersonal skills acquired through their teachers and friends at school which is almost impossible.
- The school fee rates at BIS –HCMC are in the upper quartile when all Nord Anglia schools are ranked highest to lowest. Distance / on-line learning for approximately 1.5 hours per day, five days a week bears little relation to fees at these levels.
We would like you and the school management board to consider the following:
- Find an interesting daily interaction between teachers and the very young in F1 to F3.
- The 5% increase proposed for the new academic year is extremely unsympathetic to the financial impact facing everyone. It also goes against the sentiment in the Country. Most costs are reducing in Vietnam, not increasing.
- The fee structure should be adjusted for 2021/22 to three semester payments for all parents based on the 2020/21 single payment discounted fee rate.
- Agree a further discounted rate for the period of time that children have to learn on-line. Likely to be the rest of 2021. Most children are only on-line for approximately 1.5 hours per day; the regular school fee structure just does not work.
We all appreciate the school is dedicated to offering quality all round education to all our children. However, we believe the school management board must recognize the value for money equation is now completely out of sync. Many families have suffered massive financial damage and have had to restructure their businesses / services or have lost their jobs or had imposed salary reductions.
Please consider our proposal in the spirit it has been sent. We should all appreciate the current national sentiment of support & understanding in these unprecedented circumstances.

The scope of support reached a level that necessitated a formal briefing with the school administration. We are currently finalizing the documentation of parent grievances to present at our upcoming meeting.

I have finalized the formal proposal regarding tuition adjustments and submitted it to the leadership team at BIS. We are currently awaiting their confirmation for a meeting to discuss the specific grievances outlined in our initial letter.

We are approaching one hundred signatures and need to maintain this momentum to ensure the administration takes our formal request seriously. Focus on increasing the count now so we can present a stronger case during our upcoming meeting with the school board.

Most schools are lowering school fees with a common sense and community spirit. We are all together for so many years but yet such a simple kindness is not afforded. This is heartlessness.
I agree with the sentiments and requested action on fees and learning. Life has completely changed and all need to recognise this. It is not ‘business as usual’ and the domestic economy is unlikely to return to its previous levels for several years. The school must act responsibly and in line with these family pressures.
We need to understand contact hours, curriculum to be taught and services. Reduction of this due to covid should be indexed to this. Understand there are basic running costs day to day so it can’t index exactly but it needs to be a reasonable equation.
studying online at my daughter’s age can’t help us anything. she can’t able to sit and focus on the screen, also always have someone next to her and explain the things that she doesn’t understand. fix computer, back to last page in the application, want to hear and play it again…etc. it doesn’t work !!

The school fee should be adjusted to fit with virtual school. The school fee is too high for a virtual school. I have two kids studying here, and another little one is going to school after the pandemic. However, I worry I was taking the wrong decision, as the school does not care about the right of the parents and the kids. We all know kids learn more at school, not like the virtual schooling style. The Covid death rate is increasing in HCMC. F0 rate is also increasing. I don't think the situation can be better in the next 2 or 3 months.

I was just shocked to see the email regarding the refunds, which is just tiny amount of total tuition fees. My children in EY campus had had only 0.5-1 hour of online learning everyday. Wednesday was even a “well-being” day, which was study-free day.
