Libraries are places for planned and unplanned encounters, discoveries you stumble across when perusing the shelves. Designated libraries in art schools are where emerging artists build up some of their frames of reference. Why, oh why, would anyone dismantle what is working well, and a much appreciated resource for students and teachers alike?

Als theoriedocent ging ik elk jaar met mijn beeldverhaalstudenten naar de bibliotheek om uit te leggen wat voor hen allemaal van belang kon zijn. Ook gaf ik research opdrachten die ze in bib deden en die ik ter plekke begeleidde. Met de geplande verhuis kan je zo geen les meer geven (tenzij je een half uur wil opofferen aan de verplaatsing heen en terug). Zo'n materieel aanbod aan boeken en tijdschriften moet binnen de schoolmuren blijven. Het bestuur van LUCA is al lang het besef kwijt van wat er aan de basis leeft en wat echt nodig is.

Een bibliotheek van een School of Arts, blijft een plek van verbinding en verstilling en bovendien een kenniscentrum (fysiiek offline, online, virtueel). Daarom verdient deze plek net meer aandacht en investering.

As a former Luca tutor, I cannot possibly imagine how could someone conceive of not having the library at the very heart of the school. A school without a library - is a school without a heart. Please rectify, now.
