As a Berkeley resident (Regal Road) and a father of a BHS graduate, I cannot stress enough the importance of our children living and going to school in a safe environment. This ordinance will help make our community safer.

We lose so many wonderful people to the 2nd Amendment. I hope that someday we can have museum honoring those victims, as they do in Medellin, Colombia for the victims of the violence there. So many people would have thought twice and saved themselves and saved their victims if only they locked up their guns.

Hi have personal experience with this as a parent to a BUSD child. At one point we had a young college graduate sharing our home and while the rules of the house were no guns, he went against that and kept two (unlocked) and on display in his room anyways. He went so far as to text me a threatening message that in my home, with my child, if anyone entered his room uninvited he was prepared to act. When I contacted the Berkeley Police Department they could not respond. The sheriff seemed unclear on the laws (firearms in a home with a minor) and how these should be stored. I had to relocate myself and my son out of my very own home in order to feel safe. To not have support for my very own welfare and safety, and that of my son's was beyond frightening and infuriating. Because of this and the terror that's being unleashed due to guns I support #NationalSchoolWalkout and any other measures that will protect honest people from this heartbreaking fear and violence.
