When I attended Belleville East, I had several teachers who prided themselves with how strict they were toward the dress code. Girls were unnecessarily scrutinized and I swear my teachers got a little too excited when they spotted a "violation." "DRESS CODE!" They'd sneer. My god, I'm so sorry my sweatshirt says University of Kentucky down the sleeve. How distracting.
No. What's distracting is calling out students DURING CLASS and taking the time to send them to the office. The dress code is more of a problem than it is a solution. Get rid of it.

As a former OTHS student, with no strict dress code, i can not say that i understand everything that you at east go through; however, we at OTHS had the same exact problem. As a female, it is demeaning to be told that any skin that i show is too sexual. I might as well walk around in a full body suit of armor if thats the case. Male students were free to parade around sagging their pants half way down their thighs and claves, but for me to show my calves, i might as well be exilled and shunned. I work in a place where i can dress how i want as long as it is apprpriate. Not all students will get jobs where they will have stirct dress codes. Being someone with long arms and legs, i can stand here and say that it is nearly impossible to find that fits correctly so that my pants, dress, or skirt is fingertip length. Not all people are made the same, and if boys are getting aroused by a shoulder blade, clavicle, or knee cap, then we should be punishing them for their oversexualized perversions and not a female for what she wears. This is 2015, #freetheknee

It is ridiculous for a dress code to be based solely on the assumption that men can't control themselves. It is one thing if you are wearing a mini skirt, it is a totally different scenario if you are wearing a tasteful dress and get bullied by adults into thinking it is wrong.

OFallon became more lenient in their dress code during my senior year and I must say I and my fellow classmates did not do any better or worse with a little bit of thigh showing. Away with double standards!

I am a former student at Belleville East. When I attended school, the choice to wear casual spirit shirts daily was not presented. While dress code has been relaxed since I was on campus, it is still extremely sexist in it's basis. It perpetuates the hyper sexualization of teenage girls. There have been instances where my fellow female students were dress-coded for their collar bones showing from under their collared shirts. The dress code is heavily weighed in restricting what girls on campus can wear and pertains little to the boy's attire. By dess coding a female teenager at East for a skirt laying an inch or two above her knees, you're reminding her that she is indecent. That her appearance is "too distracting" for her fellow classmates. It is no longer the 1800's. Knee caps, shoulders, and collar bones will not cause a sexualized frenzy. The dress code needs to be modernized and balance in favor of both boy's and girl's attire.

while I strongly dislike the idea of a dress code I understand the reasonings behind it, and I'm glad to follow the guidelines if it is enforced for EVERYONE. The fact that a male student can wear shorts above the knee and a female can't is ridiculous. I will follow it if everyone else has to as well, male or female.
