Mowing verges is a completely pointless exercise. It wastes public money to destroy some fantastic habitat for wildlife which is need of help! I've also seen a large colony of orchids strimmed on a monmouthshire verge. Horrible sight!

Road verges are the life-giving arteries of the countryside. They link habitats and act as vital corridors for wildlife to thrive on. They also represent a remnant of our native grassland which has suffered dramatic declines during the last century. When managed sensitively road verges can support remarkably diverse collections of wild plants; great for wildlife and people! We should do all we can to ensure they thrive.

I've always thought that councils can leave more verges to grow more or at least cut them back less than they do. This will make a great difference to insects.
