Bayview 2012 Finish

Greg, We have recently learned of a unilateral decision at BYC to change the finish line from the eastern end of Mackinac Island, to where the Chicago race finishes in front of the Grand Hotel. It is our understanding this was done without consultation of the Mackinac Advisory Committee, (Which we understand, was purposely put in place to rein in such unilateral decision-making.) or consultation from the race participants. The facts as we understand them are as follows: The stated purpose of the change, as explained, was that Mission Point was becoming difficult for the race committee and our club to work with. • Double booked or gave away reserved rooms for BYC and race committee. • Booked key areas for other events hindering use for the race. • Various other untenable actions. We understand the Grand hotel approached Bayview to be the host hotel, providing a package that was better for the committee, and the event. We fully understand and support whatever Bayview suggests regarding what is or isn’t acceptable accommodations, costs, and or other matters relating to the administration of the event. However; moving the finish line, and thereby changing the race course, should not be considered appropriate for a unilateral decision. We appreciate that having race HQ on one corner of the island’s edge with the RC on the other will be an inconvenience, but that is far better than adversely impacting the race itself. The extension of the race past the harbor entrance creates many potential hazards that could not only adversely affect boat’s finishing times, but could be potentially dangerous as well. Boats would be forced to deal with shifty winds and a significant adverse current in very tight quarters. Most importantly, incoming and outgoing ferry boats to St. Ignace and Mackinaw City, freighters, boats that have already finished, and turning around to dock, and any other pleasure or commercial craft, all within that narrow passage when everyone is tired, is trouble just waiting to happen. It is not a question of if, but only when… will some catastrophe happen. We also understand that the ferry boats are supposedly going to try to accommodate as best as possible, but realistically, they will only be able to do so much. Major races place their finish where it makes the most sense for the race. The finish may have been on that side of the Island many years ago, but that was a different time, with completely different circumstances. We believe moving the finish location is a very bad idea, and needs to be rescinded. We would be happy to assist in any way that would accomplish this end.
