Fireworks are celebrating terrorism. Children go to school hungry while parents buy fireworks. Even lit responsibly they terrorfy our loved pets. They are a huge waste on the environment. Keep to professionally run public displays.

Ban the bloody things NOW. Why are politicians not listening, all parties! They are only worried about their votes, nothing else.

The misuse of fireworks in this country is absolutely out of hand. It is truly disgusting to hear about the incidents that the sale of public fireworks have caused. Every year people and animals are injured by them. It is unfair to say that banning the public sales of fireworks punishes the people that use them correctly. Okay, so we should continue to sell them to the public so people can put them in the ears of dogs, the mouths of cats and blow their heads off because it would be 'unfair' to the people that use them correctly? Are you serious? So every year children can continue to seriously injure themselves? So every year houses and public property will be set alight or otherwise damaged? Seriously? Because it would be 'mean' the sensible people that are safe about fireworks? 'Cause that is just far more important than the real lives that these fireworks negatively effect? Not to mention the fact that Guy Fawkes fall right around exam times for high school and university students. It causes an inability to concentrate and study because people are setting off fireworks almost every night for weeks. It's not like people are just setting them off on one night, and doing it safely. If it was just an event that happened on the same day every year, then pet owners could prepare and keep their animals inside, and students could also allow for this as well as parents. It's not just one day though. It's an ordeal that lasts weeks and causes many injuries and damages to property. I say ban them, because the safety of our people and the animals is far more important than upsetting some people who can manage to correctly and appropriately use fireworks.

Way past time that something was done about fireworks. From the start of next month the peace and quiet of our neighbourhood is going to be ruined by a minority of thoughtless, selfish, inconsiderate morons pretty much every night for the following 3 - 4 months. When are our gutless politicians going to wake up to the fact that the majority of New Zealanders are in favour of a ban on sales to the public.

Long overdue! The best places for these cretins are several war zones in the world which they can visit where fireworks are in abundance and they would have to purchase only a one way ticket!!

I think Fireworks should be banned as they scared animals, pollute the air with smoke, and are a waste of money. Families should be spending the money on buying shoes, clothes, food, heating, blankets, curtains NOT expensive fireworks and paying their bills.

Well said. Ban them for general use, they are explosives, and should be restricted.

I have asthma. We have 52 states blowing fireworks up the week before and the week after. You can develop asthma and you are. I woke up the 5th because i was choking. I woke up coughing and weezing. Im soo discusted with how we took the freedom way too far. People lie to get what they want and im soo sick of it. If people think justice will not pay then they are far wrong. Money grows on trees. People their is no dept. Politicians are the ground we step on because they die just like everyone else with no money. I want to speak to the president.
