This is the right thing to do and long overdue. For the restaurants that resist,they need to know that if we get our takeout or leftovers in styrofoam,we ask for cardboard or advise them that we won't be back.

I've already spoken at two meetings, and I urge support for the polystyrene ban as an important environmental strategy to helping us provide a clean future for the next generations.

I sincerely believe that it has been proven that sound environmental alternatives to polystyrene exist and should be used for the sake of everyone and the entire planet.

Styrofoam is terrible for many reasons: it can only be used once before throwing away. It's too flimsy to be reusable, and often ends up on the side of road ways or on green spaces as an eyesore. Banning styrofoam can help keep the city streets cleaner. There are great alternatives to styrofoam out there which are compostable, and can become a part of the composte initiative. As the state capital, it would be a great move to show other cities in New York what the beauty of a styrofoam ban looks like.
