This year Malibu received a "C" in smoke-free outdoor air and an "F" in smoke-free housing by The American Lung Association. This situation is completely unacceptable. Other beach communities such as Laguna Beach, Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach have strict regulations, limiting the places place people are allowed to smoke (cigarettes, vapes and e-cigs included) to their homes and cars. Regulations such as these would benefit not only the health of our community but also that of the broader environment, not to mention reduce possible fire hazard.
In 2009, Malibu followed up the No Smoking on Public Beaches ban with an ordinance that banned smoking within 20 feet of a public event, such as a farmers' market. As well, it banned smoking within 20 feet of outdoor dining areas on public or private property, such as hotels and supermarkets. Businesses with outdoor dining areas were required to conspicuously post and maintain "no smoking" signs within the area. Clearly, these regulations are not being enforced, as witnessed by not only the amount of cigarette butts on the beach but the amount of people smoking outside of rehabs, gyms, office buildings and markets.
We want Malibu to be a "SMOKE-FREE" community. Free of SECOND HAND SMOKE! Free of smoking IN ANY PUBLIC PLACE!

I was walking near the market earlier and honestly the amount of butts I saw in the sand is just infuriating especially since we already have rules that people completely ignore now. I am digging through the old ordinances to see where the enforcement actually fell apart because it feels like everyone just stopped trying to keep our air clean.

I really thought this might just be a small thing I wrote during a particularly frustrated afternoon but the momentum is actually building in a way that feels pretty surreal. Honestly I keep checking the screen and thinking about how much people care about the air quality here because it really hits home when you see how many of us are just tired of the smoke on our beaches and sidewalks.

Fire safety too please! Too many people throwing butts out of car windows and beaches
The medical marijuana dispensaries even market their products and events on the beach, suggesting it's legal and acceptable to smoke pot on the beach.
Disgusting air pollution and a direct source of wildfires: smoking must be banned Outdoors in Malibu.
I'd really appreciate being able to walk from Ralphs to Starbucks and not be breathing in smoke.
I commend the creators of this petition not only for myself, but for all the non-smoking, health conscious clean air loving humans in Malibu. It is so sad that we are reduced to being exposed not only burning tobacco smoke, but second hand exhaled smoke as well. Let us encourage the highest standards, rather than the lowest!
Please save our us all from fires!!!
The fact that we would even still have to sign a petition to get rid of smoking is absolutely ludicrous. We all know the negative effects of smoking including Taking Lives. Enough is enough stop the insanity.

WHY are there only 76 signatures?! Amazing start but really. People smoking cigarettes on the beach next to my one year-old girl and throwing it in the sand and me having to throw it away so the tide doesn't take it.. is frustrating to say the least.
