Pennies are seriously hurting the U.S. economy. We need to band together and take action, do what is best for our country. Everyday, the U.S. is wasting money printing pennies that are, in the big scheme of things, worthless. What can you afford with a penny? Nothing. And yet America is wasting money every day to print pennies. Banning pennies would not affect charities or have a negative impact on the economy, in fact, the economy would only benefit. Canada did it, France did it, the Netherlands did it. When will we open our eyes and see the solution right in front of us? Join the cause. Ban pennies.

I am still fielding questions from people who ask if this change is truly possible despite how obvious it seems. The logic remains simple because we are throwing away real wealth to produce useless copper discs that nobody wants in their pockets.

Seeing this conversation take off brings me so much relief because I have been frustrated by hoarding these useless copper bits in my jars for years. It is incredible to know that so many of you share this common sense vision for our economy.

I don't think you should use the word ban; people will still want to use pennies, the best thing to do is to stop production of pennies and do what Canada did: have businesses send the pennies to the mint for them to be melted.

Pennies cost more to produce than they are worth. Yet because of inflation, they are worth so little that many Canadians don’t bother to use them at all. It’s not very different in New York City. In January, when Starbucks raised the price of a 12-ounce cup of coffee in Manhattan to $2.01, with taxes, many coffee drinkers were appalled — not so much by the cost as by the indignity of needing to fish for pennies. In the intervening weeks, I’ve given up on coins at Starbucks and begun paying for my morning joe electronically.

The United States has eliminated a small denomination coin in the past with relatively little trouble. In 1857, the Mint stopped making the Half-Cent coin, partly because the cost of making it had exceeded its face value, and partly because it was considered to be so small a denomination that it was no longer needed.

Is it really that hard to deal with pennies? First, Chipotle outlets couldn't bother to count out cents because the chain claimed doing so slowed down customer interactions. Now, a store in Vermont has stopped dispensing pennies for change altogether. Power Play Sports in Morrisville, Vt., put the new policy in place earlier this month. The sporting goods shop will still take customers' “outdated, outmoded, overpriced nuisance of coinage” owner Caleb Magoon told ABC News. However, the store is no longer “actively using them,” he said. Unlike Chipotle -- which was caught rounding change down, cheating customers out of their pennies -- the Vermont store will round customers' change up to the nearest nickel. That means the store could lose a maximum of four cents on any cash transaction, Magoon tells NBC. No big, he implies.
