Ban on "political stickers." Are they going too far?

EVERYONE should have a safe place and a feeling of belonging.

As mother to a rising 5K-er in a feeder district, I am devastated; I know this will trickle down. We are trying to raise a kind, compassionate human. Knowing that the school district will have a counter narrative is disturbing.

I have two children who graduated from AHS. One in 2005, the other in 2007. At one time we were proud to say our children attended AHS, now we embarrassed and saddened to see the changes trying to be made by the current school board

Stop over reaching and let EDUCATORS do their job.

It is unnecessary to have these types of policies.

If there were no complaints, there's no need for policy introduction or change. The continued politicization of school boards has got to stop.

I am sick of Waukesha County being a poster child for bigotry. Please don't do this.

As an alum of AHS, this is truly embarrassing. Sad to see that nothing has really changed in 10+ years. Do better.

Banning ‘safe spaces’ sounds like a good idea to you? Really?

Arrowhead Class of 2010. Really disappointing to see that things haven’t meaningfully improved in 10+ years.

Failing to allow our youth to express their thoughts, feelings, and orientation is preparing them to fail when they’re released to the outside world. If this amendment passes, we as a community fail our children, their rights, and ourselves. I was blessed with accepting and loving parents that had the means to bring me places outside of my sleepy small town of Hartland Wisconsin. Later in life, I had the ability to go to college and meet people from all walks of life, culture, ethnicities, and orientation (all things our beautiful small village does not have). Ashamed to admit, I was not prepared by my upbringing to fully understand and listen to these people. As I grew and matured, I learned to love my new neighbors. The more I thought about it, I wasn’t ashamed of myself, but I was ashamed of the environment I was raised. I was let down by the the sheltered high school of the white, Christian, bigoted politics that ran/currently run our town of Hartland. I think uneducated politics who propose amendments that prohibit children to have flags posted in school, on their person, or their vehicles shows how scared of what else is out there. I challenge anybody who supports this amendment to challenge their own believes.

This is pathetic. Protect LGBTQ+ kids. Do better

Speaking as an alumni, I would not consider AHS an inherently safe space for queer, gender non-conforming or non-white students. Safe spaces pop up because the environment surrounding them is not safe. If your students or faculty feel that it needs to be stated that their classroom is welcoming for all, maybe reflect on why they need that assertion. This is a shameful, fear-mongering, unintelligent, cowardly proposal.

Yes, the AHS board has gone too far, Stop the Bans!

This proposal promotes a lack of care for students who are minorities and clearly will disallow students from feeling included.

Safe space signs need to be included in cis, heterosexual, white dominated spaces because they historically, and currently, and dangerous places to encompass other identities. Additionally, this ban goes against the Constitution’s first amendment, the right to freedom of speech and freedom of expression, which includes signs expressing various identities. This is unacceptable and will harm kids that already have vulnerable and targeted identities.

Stop treading on the already downtrodden. The board should be ashamed of what they are attempting to do here to children.

Safe space for all!

This goes too far! Have you polled students to know their feelings on these issues? Student voice is a powerful facet to consider and dare I say as important as adults not attending classes.

To Arrowhead School Board members: After reading the article "Arrowhead considers banning signs promoting safe spaces and other things that could 'create division'" in Monday's Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, I need to make you aware of my disapproval of this new policy proposal. It is another example of many AUHS board members wanting to micromanage what is going on at the high school. To those on the board who disagree with me, please explain the need for this policy 335. Has the administration made you aware that such a policy is necessary because of problems that they have experienced with students or parents? Have any teachers or parents made you aware of the need for this new policy? If so, what are these problems? If the administration, teachers, or parents have not recommended that you adopt this policy, do you plan to survey them to see if they think this policy would be a good or bad idea and why? Furthermore, Policy 335 is not a priority. We have heard of instances of students' home and food insecurity at Arrowhead. We know there are ceilings leaking in the school. We know that teacher attraction and retention is a critical focus for our district. Improving and enhancing the quality of student experience at Arrowhead, one that is free of bullying and harassment, is another. Improving school finances and lobbying for changes to the funding formula is also a priority. And let’s not forget community engagement for any potential increase in revenue to fund infrastructure projects. Policy 335 doesn’t rank anywhere on the list of priorities for the school board and administration. It will most likely serve as a distraction from working on the top priorities for our district. The policy appears rooted in paranoia and misinformation. The belief that flags, signs, or stickers determine how kids develop their gender identity, or that the presence of flags other than the US or Wisconsin flag somehow makes kids unpatriotic, isn’t realistic. Please abandon
