We need this. Hospitals turn you away when you finally get the courage to walk in and they tell you to come back when the addict is experiencing withdrawal symptoms, if it was that easy and you were able to stop the using until you hit withdrawal you wouldn’t be there in the first place. We need options for those suffering from mental illness and drug addiction

My father is 78 and bad alcoholic. He's fallen or hurt himself 15 times at least in last year alone. Police EMS adult protective health agency all have done absolutely zero. There is always some loophole or pass the buck.new York needs serious law reform.

I've lived in Florida for 10 years. A baker act-like law is not the answer. I was baker acted in Florida on two occasions and once I moved back to New York I was committed once and I can tell you that the process in New York is far more dignified and thorough than the Florida Baker act process. Under no circumstances should a police officer be allowed to make a determination as to rather or not a person is committed beyond involuntary transport. In Florida a police officer, aka someone who is not a trained mental health professional, has the authority to initiate a 72 hour hold. In New York the officers imput ends once the individual is brought into the facility at which point a mental health clinician makes the determination ONLY AFTER personally interviewing the individual whereas in Florida the clinician doesn't interview the individual until after their first night in the facility as the police officer, AKA not a mental health professional, had already decided that they were being admitted for the 72 hour period.

Having family members that need care but deny it because they don’t think they do is beyond frustrating. They aren’t in the right mind to make decisions for themselves.
