I'm an ASU graduate student with the School of Earth & Space Exploration, and I was just informed that I am the recipient of a GPSA teaching award. Unfortunately, the shine has been dimmed considerably by subsequently reading about ASU's treatment of its full-time instructors via the Inside Higher Ed article.

This increased course load essentially excludes instructors from service to the department and university, effectively muting their input on activities that affect their work and status at the university. Once again, the privileged classes (in this case, administrators and tenured faculty) see their own contributions as more important and more vaulable than those they choose to exclude.

To help make up for the budget deficit, scale back the enormous salaries of administrators, deans, the provost, and the president. Let them provide true leadership by modeling shared sacrifice.
