As an ASU alum (BA, BS '98, MA '00) and a tenured faculty member at a liberal arts college, I think this new policy is terrible for students and faculty alike. Students, particularly in writing courses, require care and attention that is difficult for any instructor to provide on a 5/5 load. Instructors deserve humane treatment and respect for the impossibly difficult work they already do for ASU students. Forcing them into a 5/5 load places a faulty notion of (market) efficiency ahead of the educational imperatives that should be guiding Arizona State. I'm disappointed in my alma mater.

Thank you for your comment. Teachers can complain all they want but unless ASU sees that they might lose students because of this nothing will change.

This is unconscionable. The teaching load at ASU is already heavy and it's extremely unfair to faculty and students to make instructors teach 5 courses per semester, especially without additional pay!

Even a four-four teaching load has a negative impact on both how much attention each student can receive and the health of the Instructors. A five-five load is devastating for both students and Instructors and will cause definite harm to student learning and to retention of the most highly qualified employees, not to mention being catastophic for employee morale.

I trust that ASU and other institutions will begin to pay more attention to retention and helping keep the students who enroll by offering them quality teaching and fair compensation. Education is too important to compromise, and stakeholders should be (should have been) involved in decision-making that impacts the number of instructors and the number of students impacted as a result of this planned change.

To the people who made this decision, you have embarrassed yourselves and your institution. I urge you to restore the 4/4 load, pay your faculty a commensurate salary, and stop selling short your faculty and students. Show some real leadership and put yourselves in their shoes.

As someone who teaches a couple of states away, this trend is terrifying. To require instructors to teach 5/5 without compensation, and increased enrollment caps, is doing a huge disservice to the very people we are there to teach. This is dead wrong.
