University administrators should take a pay cut before they implement this destructive policy. Raymond Burse, president of Kentucky State University, took a 90K pay cut so that the lowest paid workers at his university could be given a minimal living wage. The people who actually do the educating deserve a pay increase, not an effective pay cut by increasing the hours they must work for the same pay.

Working conditions are learning conditions. Overworked instructors mean poor quality instruction. And it's a blight on the humanity of higher education.

As an ASU alumna and current assistant professor, I urge ASU to reconsider their request that instructors forgo their service and professional development in lieu of teaching an additional course per semester. Hard-working, dedicated, professional writing instructors who are able to stay on top of their field and emerging pedagogies benefit ASU students hugely. I owe a great deal of my eventual success to my first-year writing instructor, Adelheid Thieme, who essentially re-taught me to write when I was a freshman. Every ASU student deserves the level of expertise in and personal attention from their writing instructors that I received. Instead of asking the English instructors to do more work for the same pay, ASU should be looking at how they can pay their instructors a wage that better reflects their current excellence.
