As a WPA always in need of FYC instructors, I understand how many sections need to be taught and how far the budget must be stretched. However, these needs should not outweight the needs of our instructors, NTT or TT. A 5/5 course load for FYC is unbearable and takes us back to the early days of English A lecture halls with hundreds of essays needing to be graded, very little time for anything but grading, and a pedagogy that suffers when simply getting through the workload is the focus of the instructor. even I cannot condone this 5/5 teaching load.

Plentiful research shows the negative effects of high class size and section loads on the quality of instruction that writing teachers can provide. It's physically impossible to respond effectively to multiple papers and drafts of students in five sections, not to mention keeping up with individual consultations, class planning, course management, and corresponding with students. Add to that the effects on morale of low pay and status and the usual poor working conditions of NTT faculty and one can't imagine a worse situation. How can a university like ASU so demean and marginalize teachers of THE most important, core learning experience for its students--the development of college-level academic literacy? ASU's accrediting agency ought to play a role here--take away their accreditation until they can provide respectable salaries and working conditions for the NTT writing instructors.

25% more work without any increase in pay? Are you kidding? Apart from the exploitation of your staff, consider the cost to academic quality: if you go to a 5/5 load, you pretty much give up on university-level instruction and become a glorified high school.
