Assigning Obscene and Harmful Material

This book should never be assigned to any child in High school. Very disgusted that this is even being considered.

Entirely inappropriate. Educators should be promoting reputable values and behaviors instead of the opposite.

Porn degrades young men and women. Please give them pure stuff in our educational system.

The public schools need to promote strong moral and character values as opposed to the negative values that this book promotes.

Just because the movie is PG-13 does not mean the book is PG-13.

I just watched the school board meeting from the 14th today (11/30) when I heard about this issue from another parent. I am extremely irritated that this material would be used in school without notifying me first. I’m not sure who the members of the committee are who approved The perks of being a Wallflower as appropriate high school lit knowing full well that their decision would allow teachers to put that book in my kids hands without my knowing about, but it would be an understatement to say I don’t think much of their judgment. In fact, I find their decision completely arrogant. These are MY KIDS not theirs and this decision was way outside their spear of authority at least on a moral level.

With so much material available, why is obscene or indecent material even being considered. This is shameful. I would not want my 2 children to be exposed to this. And I would demand to know if such material were presented.

I was appalled be a movie my son was shown at Hempstead several years ago but didn't find out until after he had seen it. Some parents actually want an active role in their child's life and education and should be allowed that right.

This is a no brainer! The school has overstepped it's boundaries in a big way with the obscene material being assigned to students! As a parent, I'm appauled and completely disgusted in our district for allowing this to happen!

What I am wondering is at what point that the school system took it on as their right to teach our children about Human Sexuality instead of doing the job of taking the time to teach them math and reading literature that with strengthen their intellect. This book being assigned as something that the young prople must read is inappropriate. You are assuming that ALL young people are doing these things. Maybe some are not and you are making them fill their thoughts with this. Please protect our young peoples munds and use those minds for something better

Not sure how any of these topics could be written at a 4th grade level. I think all kids should be allowed to read what they want but not be forced to read things like this at a young age

Petition signed! I cannot believe our schools are making our children read this garbage! My daughter enters high school next year. She WILL NOT be reading this book, whether the school tries making her read it or not. I was disgusted after reading some of the paragraphs from it... No way will I allow my children to be exposed to that junk by teachers who are supposed to protect them.

It's interesting that we already have a rating system in place that could provide common sense guidance when selecting books for our children to study in high school & below - movies are rated for a reason. Graphic content is not something I want my kids exposed to, especially without my guidance & knowledge. The book that is driving this petition, Perks of Being a Wallflower, seems like it would have an NC-17 rating based on the info below. Why would we not heed these types of guidelines for all material our kids are exposed to, not just movies? Adults have a choice to read this material or not. When you are assigning it to students, you take away their choice and are not only exposing them to sexually-charged materials, but endorsing the thoughts portrayed as a norm of society. How can society on one hand bemoan the lack of sexual morality among teens and on the other introduce perverse and abusive sexual behavior as required reading?! I am appalled that I even have to sign such a petition.

I am not signing this petition because I believe in sheltering my kids. I am signing because I believe that it is impossible to shield our kids from these things and I believe that as a parent I still hold the right to teach boundaries and morality to my children and would like to be given the opportunity to discuss these difficult things with my kids when they are exposed to it.

The video of the lady who read portions of the book starting @ 29:30. This book was disgusting, embarrassing, & did not seem to be productive in any way. This book is a perfect example of why sexual violence is a problem. This book promotes humans as animals in regards to sex, it puts sexual violence as a normal thing & exposes children to ideas that seem irrelevant. It is imperative that families are allowed to be the guardian for the minds of their children.
