As an alumna of W&L and someone who maintains friendships with those living in the Lexington area, I am deeply troubled by the standards for placing ads in a community newspaper like The News-Gazette. You should not be getting paid to print hate speech which works to exclude people of color and of a certain political affliation from the Rockbridge County community. While clearly you can attempt to play this off as "not representing the beliefs of the paper", I am concerned about what I imagine is a double standard in print. If this had been offered as an opinion article or letter to the editor about the Confederate flag, I doubt you would have printed it (even though you would also be able to claim that the opinion is not your own) because it is merely an attack on a group. People should not be able to pay to advertise their hate. I also hope that this Raymond Agnor is not a business-owner because if so, then you just advertised an openly discriminatory business. Please apologize and reconsider your advertising policy.

I have been a subscriber of the News-Gazette for fifteen years and had intended to be a subscriber for the next fifteen too. The publisher has made that impossible. When I called their office, a staff member told me that they too were upset by the ad, but that it had been sent up to the publisher who approved running it. That was a horrible decision. The editor told me he would pass on my concerns to him, but that, unfortunatley, the publisher was out of town and could not be contacted. That is indeed unfortunate. I hope the News-Gazette recognizes the depth of their collective error. I would hate to see them go out of business due to a loss of buyers, but better that than for them to continue to serve our community so horribly.

I am mortified that this hate speech was printed in our local paper, and that the NG took money to do so. A formal apology, and promise to never again let this happen is the least they can offer our community.

I subscribe to the NG. Just because you're paying to post an ad doesn't mean you can put whatever you want in the ad. The paper should reject these sorts of ads.

i trust that this was a clerical oversight, and I expect that the only newspaper that serves our community has the professional integrity to recognize, accept, and apologize to the community it serves.
