I stopped my membership in the AAFP because I could no longer in good conscience fund an organization bent on expanding abortion, endorsing detrimental sexual lifestyles, and advocating for physician assisted suicide. Because of the requirement to belong to the AAFP, I am no longer able to below to the state AFP. I informed the AAFP and the NCAFP exactly why I was no longer a member of the organization when I left.

As a caring human I could not willingly destroy a healthy developing life and I know that any other physician of integrity and morality could not do the same.

I am sad to see the AAFP drift away from int's commitment to health and wellbeing in recent months and years as pressures from non medical advocacy groups bring political and social platforms to be adopted by the medical community that has before strove to be above such bickering. Taking life should never be supported by the flagship representative body of physicians. Individual situations and ethics can be argued but as a principle intervening to cause is in direct opposition to the relationship we commit ourselves to with every patient, no matter how small.

I have been a member of the AAFP for almost 30 years. I have always been pro-life, but I appreciated the position that the AAFP held, allowing for the right of conscience and the prevention of coercion to participate in abortion while also advocating for the right to perform the procedure (scope of practice issue) by those who had appropriate training in the procedure. As an organization with such a diverse membership, that was the wisest position, advocating for the individual physician members to practice within their scopes of practice and rights of conscience without necessarily supporting nor prohibiting the procedure.
I am concerned that the AAFP could ultimately fracture relationships with the state AFP groups and lose membership and influence in much the same way as the AMA has over the years due to members feeling unheard and/or unrepresented. I know of several AAFP members (and some recent residency graduates) who quit or were close to canceling (myself included) their memberships over the AAFP's stance on physician-assisted suicide. The AAFP's taking of a more radical position in favor of abortion as opposed to merely advocating for the scope of practice could weaken the specialty and its other advocacy efforts. Some members may forgo membership in the AAFP and state affiliates “as the last straw” while opting for other organizations with missions and values more in line with their own. Abortion is the only procedure that comes to mind that involves, by design, two patients going in and only one patient coming back out alive. I respectfully ask the AAFP leadership to reconsider its change of stance in favor of abortion.

The AAFP needs to hear from all of us members who value life at both ends of the spectrum. The FMIG are well organized and are vocal but I do not think they are representative of the make up of the AAFP...and we need to prove it to the AAFP. PLEASE pass this link on to your colleagues who share these same values and concerns!

Abortion is the termination of innocent human life. I can think of no life or medical situation where we should find this purposed event medically or socially "necessary" ..."appropriate" ..."acceptable" ...or ....someone's right. ( Yes, ectopic pregnancy requires this loss, but this pregnancy is not at all what we are talking about here ).

Advocacy for abortion is not something that the AAFP should be involved in. Improving health and wellness goes hand in hand with the hippocratic oath “... above all do no harm”. There are at least 2 patients being cared for with each pregnancy - the AAFP should avoid the slippery slope of placing more value on one life over the other - instead, let’s value ALL life and above all do no harm.
