Ask AAFP to Reject Recent Support of Abortion

I cannot support a medical society that does not advocate for the unborn. I also cannot support a medical society that will not stand up for my right of conscience based upon my religious beliefs. I would strongly urge the AAFP to develop policies and position statements that are evidence-based, and not based on special interest groups or political leanings. This was the undoing of the AMA - please do NOT let this happen to the AAFP!

I am a former AAFP member, and I chosen not to continue my affiliation as policy changes over recent years do not reflect my views.

I am now retired, but during my career as an FP, I delivered 720 babies, including scrub-assist for 41 C-sections. One of my prenatal patients was an urgent referral from an older woman volunteer for Cincinnati Right to Life, who had offered to fill-in to take calls that day for the organization. She had just taken a call from a young woman who said she had come out of the Cincinnati Planned Parenthood clinic after having “the first stage of a two day abortion” started, but then she felt the baby kick as she went out the clinic door, and decided she couldn’t go through with the second stage.” She was calling to ask if there were any way to stop the process. I was able to see her in my office 45 minutes later, where I assessed her to be 16to 19 weeks pregnant by dates and uterine size. Fetal heart rate was 160-170 by Doppler (and audible by stethoscope). There were three partially-expanded seaweed laminaria inserted in her 1.5 cm cervical os. I removed these without difficulty. After doing so I could see an amniotic sac, and as I looked, I saw a little foot rub past the cervical window of that sac. I put her on cephalexin and low-dose oral terbutaline. 1-day followup: Still feeling occasional kicking, no contractions, FHT 160, cervix closed. Medically, the rest of her pregnancy was totally normal. Initially, the baby daddy indicated that he wanted to remain involved with her and the child, but he dramatically bailed before the end of the second trimester. Then she asked me for an agency that could help her make arrangements for an open adoption. This went so well that she and the adoptive parents made plans for them to be in the delivery room with her for the labor and delivery. The downside for me was it would be in the state of Kentucky where I did not have obstetrical privileges. (But that was only my little loss, not hers.) Positions like this, as well as your position on gay marriage, are why I cancelled my membership several years ago. I will not be renewing my membership as long as you continue to push a radical leftist agenda.

Do not estrange our membership by alienating a large segment of the AAFP with this move. Maintain our trust - with you, and with our patients. The majority of our patients do not want such a move; and our constituent members who do, have the freedom to take that personal position. Do not force such a repugnant blanket position upon our Academy. Let us agree first that "Do No Harm" applies to ALL of our patients - not just to the ones who can talk. I am an AAFP member anda member of CMDA and I fully support this petition. Whether I will continue to be a member, depends upon the organzation not continuing its march away from Hippocratic medicine and against the best interests of all patients, born and unborn and its antiscientific advocacy for fashionable leftist positions that harm people who are confused or deluded about the reality of their biologic sex and promote encourage treatments that deny that reality, just as abortion denies the reality of the unique humanity of the unborn child. Just as abortion is murder medical or surgical treatment to alter a persons basic sex is malpractice (whether deemed so by leftist judges or not) and child abuse if done to minors.

AAFP must remain proliferate!!

Family Physicians, perhaps more than any other group, care for ALL lives at ALLages, & the AAFP’s embracing of abortion is NOT at all consistent with that!

As a family physician, life is beautiful, even the pre-born. 3 of my siblings were adopted into other families, but we know we were family, and we do family events nearly daily.. The Native Alaska way is for good friends or family to adopt those “surprises”. Children are valued. As a family physician I was taught to care for new life as pregnant ladies, throughout life, and at the end of life to treat elders with respect.
