As a physician who took the Hippocratic Oath, I believe in the sacredness of life. Having seen 10 week-old babies leaping in their mother's wombs on ultrasound it is impossible to deny the life that is there. AAFP member since 2005, that will probably end if the AAFP no longer remains neutral.

I respectfully urge the AAFP to go beyond neutrality and actively embrace diversity of thought and practice. I believe this very plurality is our strength. Ethical discourse and moral nuance is not possible in a black and white world, and thoughtful conversations in this area, with our patients and with each other, requires wading into the grey. As morally certain as I may be in defining life and my duty to protect it, I realize that not everyone, including some individuals whom I greatly respect, shares my view.

Given the division of our country on this issue it is not surprising that AAFP members can also hold divergent views. I feel strongly that the AAFP should not advocate for abortion which deprives a child of their right to life. I am sure that other members feel differently. For this reason I feel the AAFP should remain neutral in its stance on abortion.

As an active AAFP member for the past 47 years, I am dismayed at your current disregard of your prolife members. We made the AAFP great and continue to treat the whole family, born and unborn. Please include us in the AAFP policy statements.
