Araibira was doing a great thing for sumo fans in countries where TV coverage is not available. Not only that, but $120 a basho (or $720 for a whole year's worth of bashos) is a hell of a lot to pay for an unedited single-camera-angle stream - if you compare it to the cost of TV/streaming subscriptions to other sports, in some cases the cost might be comparable, but the quality of the coverage is not even close! For $120 a basho, or even the single-day options, people expect something more like TV coverage - replays, statistics and more than one camera angle. Moreover, many of us don't have the time to sit through the whole day's bouts, but with Araibira's single bout videos it was easy to watch the day's Juryo and Makuuchi bouts, while also taking in a good sample of lower division bouts (to get a more rounded picture of the sport, to try to spot future stars, and to follow favourites demoted from Juryo). In short, removing his YouTube channel was a heavy-handed move, and in many ways counter-productive - Araibira's channel made it so much EASIER for people to discover, become interested in and follow sumo; removing the channel, on the other hand, has only made it much more difficult. Unless sumo is easy to discover and sample, where will future fans come from? Please, Nihon Sumo Kyokai, even if you won't contemplate letting Araibira re-establish his channel, at the very least please set up your own YouTube channel - even just an archive of previous tournaments, rather than the latest basho, would be something worthwhile, to sumo's present fans and to all the fans it doesn't yet have.
