Imagine you were hungry, homeless, and didn’t know exactly where your next meal was coming from. Imagine you got food from a shelter like the Union Gospel Mission or the like. Those places are inarguably important to the community.

Now imagine the world’s largest football stadium. We could fill it to the brim with untouched, edible food that gets thrown out in the United States each year. Food waste and world hunger are real things. Around the world 30 million people die each year from starvation. With that football stadium filled with thrown out food we could feed those 30 million FOUR TIMES. Here in the US 1 in 8 kids goes to bed hungry and 1 in 8 people are food insecure, which means they need help from places like the Union Gospel Mission.

How does this affect Salem or this little university? We have the power to feed these people at Union Gospel Mission and possibly other places with the edible, untouched leftovers from Aramark. After each meal, so much food is lost because no one took it from the stations and it can’t be served to students again. Nearly everything that is prepared (not produce, cereal, or desserts) and not eaten is wasted even if no one touches it. So it goes in the garbage. How sad is that? But it doesn’t have to be this way. We can change it.

Jesus calls us to feed those who are hungry. So that’s where you come in. By signing this petition, we are one signature closer to Aramark corporate letting us take the untouched, leftover Aramark food to feed the hungry people of Salem, Oregon and one step closer to another means of popping the Corban Bubble.
