I don't see any reason why the drivers should be held closed. MediaTek earns its money by selling hardware. Why the driver hurdle?

Open source drivers are essential so that old devices can be updated for security an functionality reasons. Would be great if Mediatek changed their minds. However, my next smartphone (Fairphone 2) will have a different chipset with is open to future development. Bye, bye Mediatek!

I´ve bought two Mediatek Based smartphones and was very pleased by it´s price. but unfortnately , development for custom roms and updates is almost non-existent, due to the restriction of the source codes from the kernel, which needs to be open freely

I have atleast 4 mtk mobiles, but because I am not able to much customization I am thinking of not going for mobiles with this chip-set unless it becomes open source. These mobile come cheap but no much future upgrades is a big problem.

MediaTek chips are great, they offer good performance for a small price. However one thing is missing: open source drivers to let the community make the devices actually work. Hardware is nothing without software.
I think opening the driver sources will benefit everyone: the users will get awesome support, MediaTek will become more attractive for more users and will gain in popularity.
Not to mention that if you MediaTek wants to enter the Chromebook market, this will double the benefits for everyone.
