Not just AOSP, we need CyanogenMod, AOKP, OmniROM, ParanoidAndroid, MultiROM, Carbon ROM, AICP, and the list goes on.

My opinion is 50-50.
I recommend that you buy Mediatek phones because they'll introduce you to XDA, where you can cry out for want of updates for your unsupported 'legacy' Mediatek devices.
I don't recommend you to do so if you're already an XDA user, and if you depend on updates and not being stranded 6 years in the past.
