Recently, Iris and Louis Andros, my cousin and her husband were arrested in Egypt for trying to adopt 2 orphaned infants. They thought everything they were doing was legal and legit but they were tricked and given forged documents. The contact person in the orphanage said everything was legal but when they got to the US embassy, they were turned over to the Egyptian authorities. They are being held in prison there, and are being charged with human trafficking. Iris and Louis have been married for many years and with no luck conceiving a child, they decided to go to Egypt to adopt twin orphans. They are good people and were by no means trying to sell the children. According to the news stories, adoption is now illegal in Egypt. They are facing 10-15 years in prison if convicted. These are decent people, and respected members of their community. THIS IS THE FIRST CASE OF HUMAN TRAFFICKING EVER TRIED IN THE HISTORY OF EGYPT. THE MUSLIM AUTHORITIES AIM TO SEND A MESSAGE TO CHRISTIANS AND AMERICANS HOPING TO ADOPT COPTIC ORPHANS BY MAKING AN EXAMPLE OF IRIS AND LOUIS. LET'S SEND THEM A MESSAGE BACK!!!

The scale of this response has provided the leverage required to escalate our case to the Department of State. I am currently coordinating with legal counsel to include these petition records in the formal briefing materials for our embassy representatives.

This is absolutely heartbreaking. They were just trying to be parents and help children who needed a home. Sending prayers for them to come home soon.

15 years is insane. They didnt do anything wrong besides trust the wrong person. Justice for Louis and Iris!!!

This needs more attention. How can the embassy let this happen to us citizens? Get them out of there.

Total setup. Why punish people who just want to give a family to kids that have no one else? This makes me sick.

They were victims of a scam and now they are being punished for it? This is just wrong. Bring them back to the states.
