“We uniformly condemn economic sanctions against Iran. Those who support the sanctions do not, by any means, represent our voices as Iranian Americans living in New York and elsewhere in the U.S.”

Once again, our community in the U.S. and our beloved families and friends in Iran are experiencing difficult days. Our families are banned from traveling to the U.S. by racist immigration policies put in place by Donald Trump and upheld by the majority-conservative Supreme Court. Many of us are deeply impacted by this policy, and are utterly mistrustful of and insulted by the Secretary of State, Michael Pompeo’s campaign of “Supporting Iranian Voices,” leading to threats of war between Trump and Rouhani. These anxieties are affirmed by the appointment of John Bolton as the National Security Advisor, a notorious war hawk who has advocated for war with Iran on more than one occasion. The U.S. administration has also decided to unilaterally exit the nuclear agreement between Iran and the 5+1 countries (JCPOA), an act that has led to the return of economic sanctions against Iran.

Despite the claim that these are so-called “smart sanctions,” targeting only the Iranian government, every day we are witnessing how economic sanctions only harm ordinary people’s livelihoods. From reduced access to medicine, to decades-long lack of aviation equipment, and economic devastation inducing environmental crises, the claim of “smart sanctions” has proven itself to be but a ruse. Moreover, these sanctions enable the hardliner and military factions within the Islamic Republic to control the remaining resources and further their corruption and authoritarianism. As we approach the August 6th deadline for re-imposing another stage of even more restrictive sanctions, the likelihood of further economic instability rises, and the Iranian government exerts greater pressure on students, activists, protesters, and labor organizers. While we strongly oppose the Iranian government’s economic corruption and human rights abuses, domestically and internationally, we find that this oppression is harmonious with the oppression of Iranians by U.S. policies against Iran.

However, a small number of Iranian expat organizations such as the People’s Mojahedeen of Iran (MEK) and Iranian Liberal Students and Graduates, as well as individual actors, such as Arash Sobhani, Ahmad Batebi, and Majid Mohammadi, try to present themselves as champions of the struggle for freedom and wellbeing of Iran, while at the same time supporting the very politicians that call for these harmful sanctions or advocate war with Iran. The scenario very much resembles the role that expat Iraqi politician Ahmad Chalabi and the Iraqi National Congress (INC) played in the G.W. Bush administration before the Iraq war. The basis of such unseemly alliances rests on the claim that harsher sanctions will serve the Iranian people in the long-run by undermining the Iranian government. These claims have been proven false before. It is crucial to remember that some form of U.S. sanctions against Iran has been in place since 1980 and that, even at their most economically suffocating, sanctions have done nothing to promote freedom or democracy, or to weaken the power of the government in Iran.

Therefore, as members of the Iranian community in New York, we the undersigned hereby declare that:

1. We stand in solidarity with our families and friends in Iran and in the U.S. who uniformly condemn economic sanctions and foreign intervention. We condemn those who support these policies and affirm our belief in Iran’s right to self-determination. We demand that the US administration, and its supporters, unconditionally respect Iran’s long history of striving for autonomy reaching as far back as the democratic government of Mossadegh crushed by the CIA engineered coup in 1953, all the way to the recent democratic movement in 2009, which insisted on independence from foreign powers.

2. Any alliances between a minority of the Iranian American diaspora and the Trump administration in no way represent our voices or the voices of the majority of Iranians in the U.S. Despite all the claims that are made on behalf of the “will of the Iranian People” in such appeals to Trump, there are no legitimate and democratic means for speaking on behalf of the Iranian people, a population of 80 million.

It is time to take a stand against warmongering and hateful policies from the U.S. government, and any support they may receive from the Iranian diaspora. We will not allow these forces of aggression to falsely parade as the liberating or revolutionary voices of the Iranian people. Our pursuit of justice, equality, and freedom is inherently in opposition to any measure of collective punishment and foreign intervention.

نامه سرگشاده جمعی از ایرانیان نیویورک در محکومیت سیاست های آمریکا در مقابل ایران

”ما یکصدا تحریم های اقتصادی علیه ایران را محکوم می کنیم. حامیان این تحریم ها به هیچ عنوان نماینده صدای اکثریت ایرانیان مقیم نیویورک و سایر شهرهای آمریکا نیستند.“

ما ایرانیان مقیم آمریکا و عزیزان مان در ایران بار دیگر روزهای دشواری را تجربه می کنیم. سیاست های مهاجرتی نژادپرستانه دولت آمریکا به خانواده های ما اجازه سفر به ایالات متحده را نمی دهد؛ سیاست هایی که توسط ترامپ وضع و از سوی اکثریتِ محافظه کارِ قضات دادگاه عالی تایید شده اند. بسیاری از ما از نزدیک با این سیاست ها دست به گریبانیم. ما نه تنها به کمپین وزیر خارجه آمریکا مایک پومپئو تحت عنوان ”حمایت از صدای ایرانیان،“ که منجر به تهدیدهای جنگی بین ترامپ و روحانی می شود، به شدت بی اعتمادیم، بلکه این جریان را توهین به مردم ایران می دانیم. دغدغه های ما با انتصاب جان بولتن به سمت مشاورِ امنیتِ ملیِ کاخ سفید شدت گرفت؛ فردی که به دفعات از جنگ با ایران سخن گفته است. رییس جمهور آمریکا همچنین چندی پیش تصمیم گرفت به طور یک جانبه از توافق اتمی موسوم به برجام میان ایران و شش کشور دیگر خارج شود؛ اقدامی که به معنای تشدید تحریم های اقتصادی علیه ایران است.

به رغم ادعاهای مکرّر دولت آمریکا مبنی بر اینکه تحریم های هوشمند تنها دولت ایران را هدف می گیرد، ما هر روز شاهدیم که این تحریم ها معیشت مردم عادی در ایران را به مخاطره می اندازد و باقیمانده منابع کشور را هم به انحصارِ کاملِ گروه های تندرو و نظامی در حاکمیت ایران در آورده و به آنها بهانه ای برای ادامه شیوه های فاسد و استبدادی موجود می دهد. با نزدیک تر شدن تاریخ اعمال بخش بیشتری از تحریم ها در پانزدهم مرداد ماه، چشم انداز اقتصادِ ایران ناپایدارتر می نماید و فشار بر دانشجویان و فعالان مدنی و کارگری شدت می گیرد. ما فسادِ اقتصادیِ موجود در ساختارِ قدرتِ ایران، و نقضِ مکرّر حقوقِ انسانی در داخل و خارج از کشور را به شدت محکوم می کنیم، اما در ضمن معتقدیم تحریم های اقتصادی نیز به همان شیوه معیشت و امنیت مردم ایران را به خطر می اندازند. اثراتِ مواردی مانند عدم دسترسی به دارو و تجهیزات هواپیمایی و تاثیراتِ غیر مستقیمِ زیست محیطی نشان می دهند ”تحریم های هوشمند“ چیزی جز یک ادّعای دروغین نیست.

با این همه، تعدادِ اندکی از سازمان ها و افراد ایرانی، مانند سازمان مجاهدین خلق، انجمن دانشجویان و دانش آموختگان لیبرال ایران، آرش سبحانی، احمد باطبی، و مجید محمدی، ضمن معرفیِ خود به عنوان قهرمانانِ مبارزه برای آزادی و پیشرفت ایران، آشکارا از سیاستمدارانِ هواداِر تحریم حمایت کرده و از آنان درخواست کمک می کنند. به ادعای این سازمان ها و افراد، فشار بر دولت ایران در درازمدت به سود مردم ایران خواهد بود؛ ادعایی که نادرستی آن بارها اثبات شده است. این سناریو بسیار یادآور نقشی است که احمد چلبی، سیاستمدار عراقی و کنگره ملی عراق در دولت جرج دبلیو بوش قبل از جنگ عراق داشتند. لازم به یادآوری است که از سال 1358 تا امروز، آمریکا همواره شکلی از تحریم های یک جانبه اقتصادی را علیه ایران اعمال کرده و با این حال چندین دهه تداوم سیاست های تحریمی هیچ کمکی به پیشبرد دمکراسی یا تضعیف حاکمیت در ایران نکرده است.

از این رو، ما امضا کنندگانِ این متن و اعضای جامعه ایرانیان مقیم نیویورک اعلام می کنیم:

اول: در همبستگی با عزیزان خود در ایران و آمریکا، ما تحریم های یک جانبه اقتصادی علیه ایران و مداخلاتِ مکرّر خارجی در امور کشور را محکوم می کنیم. ما همچنین همه افرادی که از چنین سیاست هایی حمایت می کنند را به شدت محکوم می کنیم زیرا معتقد به حفظ حق حاکمیت ملی و تعیین سرنوشت ایران به دست خود ایرانیان هستیم. ما از دولت آمریکا و حامیان او می خواهیم بدون هیچ قید و شرط به مبارزه طولانی مردم ایران برای استقلال احترام بگذارند؛ مبارزه ای که در آن همواره به استقلال از نیروها و دولت های خارجی تاکید شده، چه در جریانی که در سال 1332 و با کودتای سازماندهی شده توسط سازمان اطلاعات مرکزی آمریکا به سرنگونی دولت دمکراتیک و قانونی محمد مصدق انجامید، و چه در جنبش اعتراضی سال 1388 که بر استقلال از قدرت های خارجی تاکید داشت.

دوم: موارد معدود همسویی یا وحدت نظری میان برخی ایرانیان و دولت فعلیِ آمریکا به هیچ عنوان نماینده صدای اکثریت ایرانیان داخل و خارج از ایران نیست. اگرچه این عده اندک، درخواست هایشان از ترامپ را بازتاب دهنده اراده مردم ایران می دانند، هیچ بستر مشروع و دمکراتیکی به آنان اجازه نمی دهد خود را نماینده بیش از هشتاد میلیون ایرانی اعلام کنند.

زمان آن رسیده که ما جنگ طلبی و سیاست های نفرت آمیز دولت آمریکا و حامیان آن در میان ایرانیان مقیم آمریکا را محکوم کنیم. ما اجازه نخواهیم داد عده ای اندک خود را به دروغ به عنوان نیروهای آزادی خواه و انقلابی ایران معرفی کنند، زیرا مبارزه ما برای عدالت، برابری، و آزادی در ذات خود با شیوه های مجازات دسته جمعی مانند تحریم و مداخله خارجی مخالف است. شما هم در محکوم کردن تحریم های اقتصادی و تهدیدهای نظامی علیه ایران به ما بپیوندید!
