An Appeal to the Women of the United States Senate

What? No women scholars on the Board of the Women's History Museum? No women advisors to the rocess of selecting land, and even more important writing the Mission Staement and "ground rules" for an actual Museum? Back in the future to the Fifties -- again?

This museum does not have historians of women's history involved and the Advisory group of women historians was dissolved by Joan Wages. Ms. Wages motives have been raised as well as her integrity and ethics in her role as the founder. Before congress moves forward to even consider arranging for public land for this museum, much more research needs to be done to make sure historians p their independent recommendations. It is unclear whether Miss Wages and her board have the ability to raise the $500 million to build the museum. Much more invetigation needs to be done before any land is awarded to this non profit. Please read articles from the last couple of years that have raised questions about the founders and their motives.

It is crucial that professional scholars of women's history be involved in its planning and design if the National Museum of Women's History is to have a meaningful place in our culture. Without such involvement, the museum risks superficiality, inaccuracy, and even the reinforcement of old prejudices and half-truths.

The involvement of professional historians is essential. Otherwise why build the museum?

Quality, accuraxy and inspiration go hand-in-hand! Don't sell this history short!

I am an amateur historian with a keen interest in the woman suffrage movement and other aspects of women's history. I'm proud to support the efforts of professional scholars to ensure the quality and relevance of the proposed museum.

This museum is a critical addition but it must reflect the diversity and complexity of women's lives. It must teach visitors that women's history IS American history and the museum needs to fully integrate women's lives into the American story. I am disappointed in the way the museum is currently being conceptualized and that the NWHM has pushed professional women's historians out from the planning process. I expect better.

Please ensure that this important museum doesn't ignore the scholars who've made this such an important area of study--scholars who are dedicated to the success of the museum as much as the veracity of the stories told there.

Please stop this travesty.

All public historical institutions and sites need and deserve the collaboration of professional historians.

It is essential that professionally-trained historians be involved in the planning and execution of this proposed musuem if it is to have any real educational value.

It is important to have a museum for women's history on the mall. But is is crucial that such a museum be responsibly grounded in women's history scholarship.
