An Appeal to the Women of the United States Senate

Women's historians should absolutely be included, by mandate, on the Commission to Study the Potential Creation of a National Women's History Museum. How can women's historians be shut out of the process, by oversight or otherwise, of forming a museum dedicated to educating the public about their own discipline? Women's historians are and will continue to be essential to the process of bringing the NWHM into the physical space it deserves. The NWHM needs to do a better job of building connections to the academic historian community and this is one crucial way that this relationship needs to be cultivated.

As an historian of gender and a U.S. citizen, I am hope to see a National Women's History Museum that reflects state-of-the-art scholarship.

Any professionally-done museum has a professional staff and board members. The Holocaust Museum has Holocaust historians. The Museum of the American Indian has historians of Native America. And so on. A National Museum of Women's History must have women's historians. Anything less is a degradation of the field of women's history.

Please revise the bill. Establishe women's history scholars and public historians ought to play a significant role on the new National Women's History Museum Commission. The size of the commission and its composition ought to be comensurate with similar projects on the National Mall and for major Museums in the US. Finally, the US government ought to consider bearing part of the cost of building and maintaining the Museum, comensurate with the support it offers and has offered in the past to the Smithsonian and other muesums on the Mall.

Women's history is a hugely important topic--and one that scholars have seriously examined for decades. To disregard this work is to hobble this museum before it even opens.

Inclusion of women historian in all aspects of the planning is a vital for a women's museum. It has to be rooted in substances to be of value.

A publicly funded museum should share and explain accurate and academically supportable treasures which involved the women of the United States.
