There should be women historians involved in every step of this process.

At the museums across the Mall, exhibits are curated by curators who are required to publish . These curators, many of whom have their Master's or Doctorate's in History, would not dream of creating an exhibit without the leading scholarship. The National Women's History Museum should do no less.

As a woman, a historian, and a museum professional, the idea that the National Women's History Museum might be populated with non-professional political appointees pains me deeply. Women's history is an important and integral part of American history, and it should be given its just due, by staffing the museum with museum professionals and public historians dedicated to impartial, contextual, thought-provoking history and who strive to meet museum standards for excellence.

Museums, memorial centers, monuments, and other public history sites are often the only places that the general public has the opportunity to directly engage with their own history. Until relatively recently, women and other marginalized groups were excluded from the narratives created in those spaces. To do justice to women's history (and indeed to human history), it is not only appropriate but necessary to incorporate the most recent scholarship into these kinds of exhibits.

Taxpayers and museum visitors deserve to have a women's history museum that reflects the most accurate and current scholarship. Professional historians are best positioned to provide that.
